Thanks for the update, and thanks for the less wide screenshots, although I still have to zoom in to see them. The web interface looks awesome.
I have a few questions about how things work. Considering this is an RPI, I hope you understand these questions are coming from worries about other RPIs and how you're doing things differently.
1) Regarding the scheduling of the audition, how does that work if Emmaline's player has an IRL commitment like putting her kids to bed? The post says, "most roleplay should simply be played out as it happens without coordinating the details in advance," so does that mean she just has to miss her audition? How are scheduling conflicts resolved?
2) Are these auditions run by staff? If so, what mechanisms are in place staff-side to prevent favoritism? If they're run by PCs, what guidelines are they required to follow in order to judge someone's RP?
3) How does <tell> know who you're telling? Are you required to use a tilde to specify?
4) I see lines such as dreams and other RP that appears to be run by staff. With all this writing, how many players can staff support? How many players would be too many? How often are players expected to RP with staff?
5) This one isn't about policy, and rather a skill description. The description for the "tone" skill feels ambiguous. My interpretation is that you put magic into your voice to cause some mystery effect on surrounding people. Does that mean you can make them feel anxious or in love or what? Is it like an emotion amplifier?
Keep up the great progress!

I think turn based is a real missed opportunity in the MUD space. I've only ever seen maybe 2 or 3 do it and all did it well and were quite fun. The main reason, I think, is that it has to be all custom code since none of the top turnkey codebases support turn based combat out of the box.
I look to the MMO Dofus for well-executed turn based team tactics especially with the Sidekick system which is exactly what OP is asking for. Dofus' multiplay system is really wonky and probably shouldn't be followed but the Sidekicks which are the NPC teammates for your main character is definitely a great model to follow.

Hey there! I'm on the hunt for some of the largest MUDs. Here's what I mean by that:
- The MUD should have a lot of different areas. The more the better.
- The MUD should have a lot of rooms. The more the better.
Now, I'm not looking for the MUD that has some giant wasteland with a million rooms that all have the same description. What I mean by this request is: which MUDs have the largest worlds to actually explore?

Working on creating a MUD (yay) using a custom MUD game engine
It is going to feature a lighting system, Celtic religion, and the ability of players to change the map around them and even add areas. It will be scifi but also medieval.
Currently the login system is functional and you can move and use basic commands. It's available to be played at telnet://uniquelyelite.com/:9001
I'm looking for people who want to help me make this an interesting game and even see if they can find bugs or even just fool around with it.
HOPEFULLY I used the right flair, sorry if not

You know how mudlet's screen splits when you scroll up far enough? And the screen stays that way? Makes it easy to read older text while playing, right?
How do you lock the screen to keep it from scrolling all the way down when the mud sends new text on Tintin??
It's really annoying when I'll be reading a helpfile, but someone sends a message on chat and then the screen scrolls down to show me that, or just basically whatever new text the mud sends in that moment and the screen scrolls down to show me that, thus causing me to lose my place on whatever I was reading further up.
I hope I'm explaining this right. But what command stops this? It makes playing on Tintin borderline painful.

I recently got a Pixel 7 and discovered that Blowtorch is no longer supported. I used to have a full custom GUI on Blowtorch for playing Materia Magica specifically and I tried to use Nexus but they don't seem to like it if you use their client to connect to other stuff - just keeps crashing. Anyone have any suggestions here of something I may not have heard of? At this point I'm tempted to just have an AI hardcore what I need into my own developer side client lol.

I tried this game. I didn't stay long enough to learn any of the politics and other players.
My biggest hurdle that ultimately stopped me from playing was just becoming familiar with the lore as well as mechanics was an enormous time sink. I joined some group meant to train mercenaries, I think? They had training every ic day, and I grinded these skills for hours and hours, rl days p much, when I didn't even have a job so I had all the time to grind, never saw a single skill improve. After a few days of this, I was like meh, too intensive for me.
Also everyone seems to expect you to understand all the lore immediately and that lore is extensive. My first character died their first day because I didn't understand some group wasn't allowed to be in this one place? Or something.
It is a steep steeeep learning curve. So I never really got past a week or a few days playing.

Whether you want to play to the trope or play against type, the Orc is an iconic fantasy race worth playing. the original version of the Orc is a solid melee monster with a few unique traits , and normally Orcs are pigeon-holed into a front-line martial role
With Elysium's rather unique skills Characters can learn up to six core skills at a time, of which there are many different physical, offensive magical, defensive magical, healing and crafting skills to choose from. Players can also learn any number of the dozens of "common" skills in addition to their core skills
So while a "traditional" heavily amour orc warrior with duel black steel battleaxes is certainly a thing ( A very cool thing)
You could also play as a Tea-brewing , Voodoo master orc , whom has no interest in chopping heads
Or a necromantic , magical fell-blade wielding orc whom is very interested in undead heads . or indeed a vast array of orcish ideas to mix and match!
The world is immersive and has everything a fantasy setting needs - sailing, sea monsters, demonic rituals, ancient research activities, political intrigue, questing, crafting, you name it!
Free-to-play and a level-less player progression are hallmarks of Elysium.
Come carve your path in the world and rise to the rank of being a living (Orc) legend at //elysium-rpg.com/ or hop onto the discord https://discord.gg/mHbGuUg. Point your favourite Telnet client at elysium-rpg.com:7777 to start your adventure!

Hey folks, anybody know what happened to the Titans of Text podcast? I gather one of the hosts, SwiftAusterity, was once a mod here but no longer.
I really enjoyed the podcast, and find myself relistening every once in a while. The format of interviewing creators of MUDs to get a feel for what makes each MUD special is really nice, and I liked getting to know the folks behind our favorite games. The last episode was posted in July of 2020. I have to guess that the pandemic probably disrupted the hosts' lives enough to permanently derail the show.
If you're reading this and feel inspired to create a spiritual successor podcast, know that you'll have at least one subscriber and fan.

I’m sure there’s tons of these posts out there, but here’s mine…
I remember logging into a few MUDs back in the 90s and being immediately enthralled. It was like a perfect mix of the feeling I get from a good book, a video game, and a tabletop game. However, I got fully caught up in Ultima Online, then college, then life.. blah blah
Time moved on, and here I am almost 30yrs later. It’s always been in the back if my mind to come back and explore it.
Here’s what I THINK I’m looking for:
- interesting, well-written, engaging atmosphere
- Rich lore
- Interactive environment with lots to discover / inspect / collect
- Roleplaying would be cool
- I don’t mind difficulty (I prefer it) in terms of mobs, challenges, environment. I also am totally fine with cutthroat pvp / pk environments
however, being new to MUDs, an overly challenging interface / commands / clumsiness might be hard for me to pick up
I like Roguish behavior.
Thanks for any and all recommendations, thoughts and comments!!

At lower levels fights are over very fast, so if you aren't vigilant and get caught, it's over. But most of your time will be spent at higher levels and if you don't stick around for a fight you didn't start, then there's usually nothing they can do about it.

Hi guys I'm back, hope this isn't getting spammy - very much appreciate the help and guidance I've been getting from this community. Just for context, Magma is based on merc/envy.
I've got MAGMA running quite well (thanks to u/proolix u/tsp3 u/PeeonTrotsky ) and I'm down to what I hope is my last problem; mobiles and items do not respawn once killed or removed from their area.
I've got my head wrapped around the RESETS data in the zone files, and I'm pretty sure this doesn't have anything to do with buggy code there. I've noticed that the typical notifications for zone resets ("You hear the pitter patter of little feet...) do not occur. What's strange is that the time of day and weather notifications (The sun has set / it starts to snow) appear like clockwork. Some stuff I've made note of, for reference:
The ticks must be happening in some sense, because players regain health and NPCs move around when they're supposed to.
Corpses decay, including MOB corpses
I've made sure to test everything with players resting in different locations; in the area with the mobs, farther away in the same zone, and in a different zone entirely. This tells me that the resets aren't being suppressed due to player proximity.
Immortal commands (zreset) will bring mobs back, but I've noticed that they often don't reset with their equipment and items (which are also defined in the RESETS section of each zone).
I've noticed that the HEARTBEAT file in magma\src is blank, and I have no idea if it's supposed to be that way.
Thanks to anyone who's actually read all this. Finding people with knowledge about this stuff is hard these days! I've even tried going through it with ChatGPT looking at the MAGMA source, which was absolutely useless :-)

So, this is a loooong shot.
I have vague memories of playing a MUD back in the late 90s and I loved it.
The ONLY thing I remember, and I don’t know why this stands out to me to this day, is that you started out with “a fun noodle” weapon, like a fun noodle dagger or something.
I remember laughing about that —
That’s it. That’s all I got. Ring any bells?

Hi everyone,
So long story short I've been quite interested in Genesis. Eveything works perfectly well on PC.
However my problem is that for the last year, I don't have regular access to a PC. I have a smaller smarthone, and a bigger tablet.
When I try Genesis on either of those, the game loads but without the map. Even when I set it fullscreen and use an external keyboard (so the screenspace is bigger), it still doesn't load.
Does Genesis simply not work well on smartphone / tablet browsers? The same browser I use on my computer and it works there - Firefox.
Like I said i don't have regular pc access. This is the only thing keeping me back from playing the game, because it's very tough without a map.
can anyone help? Thanks!

Hello, everyone! We hope everyone who was able to participate in this year’s Spring Festival event last month had fun doing so. We at Alter Aeon have been very busy!
Here’s a summary of recent updates to the game:
- The crushing bite attack from called druid hyenas now has a minor debuff effect on skeletons.
- Channel casting has had many additional runes added, and the functionality of some runes has been changed.
- You can no longer to cast ‘crystal coat’ on containers and liquid containers in order to prevent weird weight bugs.
- Certain shopkeepers are being updated with new code to create quasi-random potions, scrolls and jewelry.
- Clothing can now drop as random loot in objects or on shopkeepers. Expect some closets, wardrobes and dressers to start filling up.
- New lapidary/mining stone: fox-eye.
- New leathercrafted armor: harness.
- New forged weapon: thresher.
- New tailored items: blouse, tunic, puss(y)bow, partlet, leotard, tutu, and tights.
- Tailoring now a delay similar, but not nearly as long, as other crafts.
- You can now add tailored ribbons to tailored/leathercrafted hats in place of a feather.
- Three new music tracks has been added for the dclient, as well as ambient sounds for campfires and proper gunshot combat noises.
Here are some areas updates:
- There is a new option for area listings: coordinates. The syntax is as follows: areas coordinates [level].
- The Palace of the Dragon Emperor, Gardens and Keep, a level 41 group 7 area in Suboria is now open.
- Mount Zendular is now a solo 30 zone. It has been modernized with proper elevation, correct terrains, updated equipment, and improved mob behavior, and the area's content has been changed to be better integrated with the areas around it and general lore of the game.
For April and beyond:
There are plans for more clean-up around Old Thalos and adjacent areas. The hope is to strengthen the lore and its association with New Thalos on Kordan and to make it thematically more in tune with the lore of the Rubicon Principality.
A similar project for equipment and general updating has been planned for the Labyrinth.
We may be adding a few more channel cast runes. You can never have too many!
At least four new areas for low-level players will be released for the island of Sloe. They will all be level 10. These are designed to enrich the lore of our early game content.

Alter Aeon is springing into action with new updates and plans for the game!
We will be running an spring themed event the last weekend in March, beginning on Friday the 24th and ending on Monday the 26th. Details are still forthcoming, but there will be activities appropriate for players of all experience levels. The Palace of the Dragon Emperor: Gardens and Keep, a level 41 group 7 zone, will open alongside the spring event.
Here’s a list of recent updates to the game:
- We added team option for player arenas that randomly assigns players joining an arena to one of two teams as part of last month’s “Love is a Battlefield” event.
- Small rooms now cost roughly half the movement of big rooms to help alleviate issues with running out of movement while just walking around on the newbie islands. Also, low level players that do not have the sneak skill but accidentally turn it on will now occasional warnings about using extra movement.
- Sleeping by a campfire will shorten the time it takes to get sharp.
- Jobs should no longer send high level players to low-level extraplanar areas.
- The ‘shield’ spell is now called ‘force shield’ to avoid issues with scribing scrolls and other naming conflicts.
- New channel cast runes for mages: Char, Ciru, Faru, Nar, Pil, Urst, Zeki, Enti, Dunn, Xix, and Marr. Also, channel casting now costs exactly 2 mana more.
- There were tweaks to warrior and thief skills to make debuffs more meaningful.
- The survey mining message for custom mineral deposits will now give some idea of how likely you are to find the mineral.
- The message for plucking multiple feathers from a corpse has been condensed onto one line.
- New leathercrafted items: cestus and harness.
- New forged held jewelry: scepter
- New forged simple weapon: thresher.
- Woodcrafted canes are no longer type WEAPON, and will not be given high dierolls. They are instead intended to be useful as held wear slot objects.
- Different forged helmets now have more diverse effects.
- Spirit hammers can now be cast with a poison extended damage type.
- ‘Soulsteal’ has a greater chance of success if the target is mortally wounded.
Expect more channel casting runes to come in the near future.
We’ve been making some updates around the starting island of Sloe in preparation for adding more low level content in the next month or two.
Work will continue on fully implementing the hunting skill and adding it to the list of Rangers’ Guild skills.
Here’s a link to our latest Youtube presentation which should provide further insight:

We hope everyone wanted to celebrate Alter Aeon’s 28th anniversary had the chance to do so! Our next game event will be the Valentine’s Day-themed “Love is a Battlefield!”, which will begin on Friday, February 10th and end on Wednesday the 15th. This event will feature a team-based PK arena quest and will be available to players of all levels, old and new alike.
Here are some updates from last month:
- Using the corpse retrieval option for “summon demon” now works cross sector but not cross plane.
- The “woodcraft check” command without any arguments will now show “(rare)” after rare types of wood.
- The uncastable 'enchant weapon' is now 'empower weapon' and has a help page.
- Bone marrow from ‘harvest bone’ and any spell component made from blood can now be used as ammunition for the ‘Gisco's giblet grenade’ spell.
- A ‘thrust’ attack can unbalance opponents on a successful hit, not just misses.
- You can now add crafted masks to southern-style forged helmets such as a hanburi or kabuto with the “forge enhance mengu” command. This requires knowing the 'forge kozane and nihonto' skill.
- Instead of seeing messages while gathering wood, there is a “carve check” command to see what items you are carrying that can be carved into totems, weapons, fetishes or spellstaves.
- The “set” command with no arguments will show a LOT more settings, such as shortid, autocompare, autocraftid, combat message mode, no gift lootcrate and more! These are also displayed with the “show settings” command. The help menu for “set” has also been broken down into categories and alphabetized to make it more readable.
- The “shadow show” command to display your shadow exposure was added, mirroring the “show shadow” command.
- Randomly generated jewelry has a small chance to have a gemstone already mounted to it.
- Shopkeeper lapidary services have been expanded. A shopkeeper that can carve lapidary materials into gemstones can now mount gemstones to jewelry and other appropriate items. This has a nominal gold cost based on the level of the base item.
- You can put quests on hold with the “quest hold” command. A quest that is on hold will not show up in your quest list. You can still advance and complete quests on your held list. You can see quests that you on hold with the “quest hold show” command.
- Two new compositions have been added to the game: SOIL and COBALT. Cobalt is primarily for making alloys, and soil is for items made from dirt or clay but not finished pottery or ceramics. There is also a new alloy: platina, forged from platinum and cobalt.
- GLASS composition will now show as GLASS/CERAMIC, since glassware and pottery have many similar characteristics.
- The ‘sickening touch’ spell no longer does lingering damage to players, but they take higher initial damage.
- The 'credit buy favor' option has been improved so it gives more favor per credit.
- Explorer point requirements for ranks in the Cartographers Guild have been slightly lowered to make it easier to advance.
- Total inventory weight can now be shown with the “inventory -weight -total” command, and the inventory weight switch now sorts from heaviest to lightest. To see which switches are currently available, type “inventory -help”.
- There has been a minor update to the drow mines and Old Thalos tunnels areas, including modernizing some equipment, adding more mobs and loot and adding a brand new quest.
Here are our plans for next month:
- Tweaking warrior power attacks to be even stronger against debuffed opponents.
- Survey mining messages to give indications of how likely finding custom mineral deposits are.
- A new "dragonscaler" job that works the same as skinning jobs, just with dragon scales.
- Reworking job parameters so that lower level players can be sent to extraplanar zones appropriate for their level, and preventing high level players from being assigned jobs for low level extraplanar areas.
- Team PK arena options in preparation for the “Love is a Battlefield” event.

Intro
We're working on a new MUD called Song of Avaria, using Evennia as a base code. Hopefully, the game will be opening for a public alpha seven months from now: January 2024. This is the fifth in a series of showcases to display the features of our game. In order to properlyexhibit the purpose of Song of Avaria, which doesn't quite fit into the existing molds,we're going to demonstrate gameplay by focusing on the story of a character: Emmaline.
Chapter 1: CHARACTER GENERATION
Chapter 5: LIVELIHOOD
Last month, we left off the story with Emmaline having been tasked by Arezou Rufsahni, a famous poet, to come up with a Sirdabi-language performance in order to audition for the Poets' Guild. She has practiced her Sirdabi until fluent, finished planning her performance, and rehearsed it to herself and to Iziro, who has become a friend. Today, Emmaline will be exploring the city a little more. She still hasn't seen even a quarter of everything there is to see in Omrazir.
Just off the south side of the wharf district, Emmaline discovers an old amphitheater. Many rooms in Avaria contain objects that can be looked at more closely or interacted with. Carefully reading the room description here leads us to try looking at the seating, which appears to have a door beneath. We try to look at this door and manipulate it.
The storage area beneath the amphitheater contains more secrets to be discovered. Emmaline finds that there is a dry well and, feeling adventurous, she decides to try climbing down...
Luckily, it's not a long way to fall. Small bruises and scrapes can be common while exploring a rough environment and generally aren't too serious. It is very dark down here, though. In the dark, it can be much more difficult to see things. Few places are truly dark in the game world, and those that are would typically be secret dungeons or other exploration opportunities rather than well- frequented areas. Even at night, there is usually enough starlight (and lantern light) to be able to see what you're doing. However, weather conditions and time of day do affect available light to the extent that it can be easier to perform stealthy actions in dimmer conditions without others noticing.
Emmaline wants to be able to see the area, so she takes out her torch and lights it. A torch, lantern, fire, or other sort of object can be lit with any combination of flint and steel items, including a single-object firestriker tool. All Emmaline has in her knapsack right now is a flint flake (which can be foraged in most areas) and a scalpel from her medkit, so she uses that. In the torchlight, she's able to see better, and finds a winding tunnel...
The winding tunnel brings Emmaline to a carved chamber where she finds a gap in the wall, and SQUEEZEs through it. Some exits will be cramped, and if Emmaline were any larger, she might not have been able to fit through the gap. Her adventurous exploration has been rewarded by the sight of a luminous underground cavern. She snuffs her torch, then wades into the pool.
Shallow water can be waded through, but Emmaline will have to swim if she wants to go into the deeper center of the pool. Swimming takes both hands, so Emmaline puts her things away in her knapsack before heading out into the deep water of the cavern pool.
Growing up in the fens, Emmaline is no stranger to water, and she's a relatively decent swimmer. She tries to DIVE. In a location with deep enough water, diving repeatedly will send you increasingly lower through a room's depths. The first dive takes Emmaline before the surface, and the next dive puts her in the higher level of the room below. She could explore further, but the cavern pool is deep and dark. There's no telling how many rooms deep it goes, and Emmaline herself has no way of knowing the water's depth. For now, she decides to resurface for air before she runs out of breath -- drowning is a very real possibility if someone gets too risky with their swimming. She swims up, and rising through the water works the same way -- her first move takes her up to below the water's surface in the cavern pool.
Luckily, Emmaline makes it up to breathable air before she passes out. Back at the stalagmite-lined shore of the cavern pool, Emmaline looks around as she works to catch her breath. Anyone can use the FORAGE ability, but their success will vary according to their Foraging skill. Rocks, moss, and other common junk can be found almost anywhere... and here, Emmaline is able to find a small smooth stone. She tries to skip it across the water.
Note that while Emmaline's breath hasn't been fully caught, the prompt symbol is a sicklier yellow, while once she finishes catching it, the prompt turns pale green again. When she's recovering roundtime from an action, the prompt is a dash, and when she's able to act again it turns into the arrow prompt once more. Prompts can be customized to show numeric values, stars, percentages, or whatever you'd like -- but this is the default version that will show more information in combat, and very simple information when outside combat. We can also see that Emmaline is starting to dry off from being in the pool, and her small bashes and scrapes from falling down the well are healing as she spends some time in the cavern.
We wanted to include some minigames in Avaria, like skipping stones here, in order to add some simple roleplay activities that characters can get up to together -- or, like Emmaline in this scene, even by themselves. Being on your own can be a bit lonely, though, at least for some people. Emmaline decides to climb back up to the amphitheater.
Exploring underneath the well was a private sort of location: unpatrolled by guards, and not within easy reach of city messengers. However, now that Emmaline is back on the streets of Omrazir, an official courier finds her with a delivery. It's a letter from Arezou Rufsahni! This letter sets up the exact time of Emmaline's audition. Due to the 1:1 ratio of Avarian time with real time, it's relatively easy to coordinate meetings, but there are still some fantasy conventions that correlate with the rough historical period of the setting.
Clocks aren't commonplace yet, let alone watches, so people often refer to time by general hours. The hour of the jackal is around sunset. This means that the hour of the jackal is at a roughly different time every month, as the sun sets at different times throughout the year, earlier in the winter and later in the summer. If someone is unsure about an hour stated IC, they can check HELP TIME or use the LOOKUP command (for example: LOOKUP JACKAL) and it will give them the current real-time equivalent.
We've tried to design the game so that OOC communication isn't required in order to coordinate IC meetings and events. As in an RPI style game, most roleplay should simply be played out as it happens without coordinating the details in advance, and it's largely non-consensual in that it's not necessary to ask permission before acting upon another character. However, there are some notable exceptions for which coded consent mechanisms have been built into the game, which will be explored in future chapters. Although we prefer people to be immersed in their roleplay like this, that doesn't mean we're opposed to all OOC communication between players, and the game does have an OOCwhisper command as well as forums and OOCmail that allow players to communicate with each other when necessary or desired. This will also be explored in a future chapter. In most cases, though, IC communication should be all that's needed.
Emmaline reads the letter, then analyzes it. Anyone might develop their own unique handwriting style, and upon analysis of a written work, further details can be gleaned about how it was written. This is part of our philosophy of making things trackable in-character, so it should be fun to solve mysteries and remain immersed both in terms of how your own character's actions may be noticed by other people, and how you are able to investigate the actions of others.
The time requested by Arezou Rufsahni is fine. The next evening, Emmaline shows up at the Poets' Place and is brought into the building to audition. The guards allow Emmaline to pass while she's following a person permitted by the organization, and the VNPCs react to Emmaline's performance.
Emmaline's audition is received well by Rufsahni and the others present, even if they are a little puzzled by the fact that her song was very different in both style and mode of performance from the poems they are used to hearing. There's a sense that they are rather set in their ways and have strong convictions about what constitutes a proper performance, but they are willing to accept Emmaline for now, and are intrigued by her novel ways. Rufsahni invites Emmaline into the guild, with the caveat that she behave publicly in a dignified manner. Djafira is jealous and resentful.
Encapsulating part of the text of an emote within tags will turn that segment of the emote into a "tell" that will only show to those viewers whose perception dice roll is higher than your dissembling dice roll. Although dissembling is the governing skill, a "tell" doesn't necessarily need to be a lie but rather anything that a character might wish to conceal, or a reaction that might just be subtle enough that most wouldn't notice (but a few might!). The code behind it works differently than a hidden emote insofar as proximity is not as relevant to detecting the tell as acting or discerning skills.
At any rate, Emmaline departs from the audition in good spirits. She looks around Harmony Hall, the Poets' Guild building, to which she is now permitted entry, to see if she can find a way to earn a better livelihood. Using the SURVEY command in a location will show if jobs can be found in the area, and then JOBS will give information on any job listing available.
A job is a coded way for a player character to make money behind the scenes. Listings can be found in public areas as well as private ones. A tavern might have listings posted for waiters and cooks, while a lumberyard might be looking for day laborers, and so on. Organizations tend to have their own careers as well, often gated within guildhalls behind organizational guards.
Emmaline was hired after APPLYing to become a Poet. Once you are hired, you can see more information about your new livelihood by looking at the JOB display. The coins from paydays will be automatically deposited into your local bank account, and you can quit the job any time. It is only possible to hold down one job in the zone at a time, and if you leave the zone for a long period of time, you will lose the job.
The affection of Emmaline's employer (an NPC, generally, and in this case Arezou Rufsahni) tends to govern her pay for this occupation, within a set range. A workplace provides more than just coin, however. It can be fun to roleplay slice-of-life at the workplace sometimes, and make connections with other player characters through the built-in plot hooks provided by a career. Jobs can sometimes grant a character local titles and reputation, and if someone asks around about Emmaline, they might find out from VNPCs that she works as a Poet at Harmony Hall. Some jobs also have associated errands (or quests) that can be accessed via the WORK command.
There is no need to actually WORK at a job, but doing so can have some perks. It's an optional thing to do that might increase affection with one's NPC employer, grant some tips, aid in exploring new areas and mechanics, and serve as a catalyst for further roleplay opportunities.
Here, Emmaline is asked to go to a certain location and recite a traditional poem. When an errand is accepted, it tends to have a time limit after which it expires. When WORKing, the errand is considered to be automatically accepted. Hints will show up at intervals until the errand expires. In typical MMORPG lingo, this is a quest, and QUEST in fact works as an alias to access the display about one's ERRANDS. However, most errands are things like simple deliveries, escort tasks, or other such small chores -- so the grandiosity of the word 'quest' doesn't really apply, and it's not generally a word someone would use to describe it IC (except maybe sarcastically). A task deserving of being titled a quest would be something entirely unique and roleplayed specifically by PCs or animated NPCs.
Emmaline's not sure where to find the Plaza of the People, but there are hints from the ongoing errand that give directions (and then later, the lines of the poem). Discovering the way to the plaza, she finds an NPC standing around waiting impatiently and realizes that this must be the person who requested the poem to be recited.
We arrive at the plaza, and see \"an average looking gentleman\" is standing around impatiently.
There, Emmaline recites the requested traditional poetry and completes the errand, earning a pleased response from the NPC patron. Now that we've done some work, we see that it's caused Arezou Rufsahni to like Emmaline better (remember, Rufsahni is an animated NPC). This increased affection could lead to a pay boost! So, we also check our JOB display to see what that looks like. It appears as if that increased affection has already led to a raise of 45 follies.
It's a great deal of development for Emmaline to be able to recite the very poem in Sirdabi that she couldn't even understand when Iziro was reciting it at their very first meeting two months ago. As a trivia note, "Three Stars" is a little like an Omrazi city anthem, the official sigil of the city being a tall wave cresting beneath three stars.
After such a long day of exploration, auditioning, and work, Emmaline heads back to the caravanserai. She tries to crouch next to the local stray she's seen so many times before and pet him. When you get close enough to touch someone, whether it's an NPC or a PC, you will incur roundtime if that person does not trust you to a certain level. There are two levels of proximity: immediate proximity, where you can touch someone; and general, where you can hear them speak quietly, such as if you were both sitting at a table together. If you are not close enough and you attempt to do something that requires closer proximity, you will automatically move closer first.
When Emmaline moves to crouch near the cat, she's joining his general proximity... and when she attempts to pet him, she moves into his immediate proximity. At least he hasn't distanced himself from her! Finally, she can try to pet him. Unfortunately, he still does not trust Emmaline enough to allow that..
Luckily, Emmaline stopped by the bazaar on her way back from the Plaza of the People -- and bought a little treat for the cat. Different animals like different kinds of foods, and tend to also have a random favorite food out of their accepted diet. It looks like Emmaline has figured out this semiferal cat's favorite food, and now she is in better graces with the feline. Maybe this time he'll allow some petting!
Aww. :) After petting the cat, Emmaline heads up to her room and takes a nap. Although sleeping, much like eating, doesn't need to be done on-screen, it can still be a nice and immersive thing to have in your log. And characters can receive dreams while asleep, after all.
Dreams can be added by the player, but staff can also send dreams to characters. While we're using the website to update Emmaline's story arc, and Emmaline is napping in the background, she suddenly gets a strange dream. This dream appears to have unlocked a new ability!
Waking up and checking her abilities and skills, Emmaline finds that she is developing a new skill: Sonomancy! This is one of the skills associated with bardic-style magic, and while there can be many variations on this type of magic, and there are many other types of magic out there in the world, Emmaline is only just beginning to learn. In Avaria, magic is innately regulated by the fact that most people possess something called "Grounding". This means that they are grounded firmly in what they consider reality, and so will have some natural resistance to magic other than that which is commonly accepted as normal. Charms and hexes, weather magic, divination, and a variety of faith-based magics are typically seen as "everyday" sorts of magic. But other, more rare or powerful kinds are generally considered either implausible, or something that simply happens "somewhere else," to other people. In any case, it can be quite traumatic to find out that reality may be something other than what one expects and thereby lose one's grounding. Thankfully, Emmaline has not gone so far as to lose hers just yet. We can check on grounding through the MAGIC command, but for now we'll just look at the new abilities.
Emmaline looks at the new abilities.
This new magic ability of Emmaline's appears to be a way to soothe aggressive NPCs (and potentially debuff aggression-related stats in PCs). This could come in very useful in the future! We will have to wait and see.
For now, here is Emmaline's updated story page.
Clicking on a specific relationship will bring up the history of that relationship. Here is how Emmaline's relationship with Iziro started and has evolved so far. While Emmaline has written three impressions of Iziro, he has only written one of her so far, which we can see in the table under "counterimpressions".
A development in a story arc can encompass as much or as little in terms of a character's story as you'd like. While you get experience for developing a story, it's capped per week to grant experience only a couple of times, so there is no incentive for players to do a great deal of unnecessary updating. We can update at whatever pace feels comfortable to us and meaningful to our character's story, and at this moment, we decided to incorporate several events into one development.
Emmaline's latest development is a busy one, with multiple roleplay logs attached.
It definitely feels rewarding to be able to keep track of a character's story! Now we're all set for whatever comes next, and here's a hint as to what that may be... Djafira is up to no good, and Chapter 6 will introduce COMBAT.
Until next time!

I've never once saw a mud game where you can create your own team of characters that you've made. Are there any games out there like that or there hasn't been any?

Alright, we all remember DragonBall Saga. Some of us had a lot of fun with it, some of us aren't aware of it's Smaug goodness.
Well folks, thanks to the work of u/proolix, the public code now compiles on modern hardware. So, that means it no longer throws random errors that you eventually give up trying to fix every time you mess with the make file!
With that known, I've spun up a copy of the game and made it available for everyone to join and play in all of it's original glory. No bug fixes, no modifications, no guarantees that it won't catch fire when more than one person joins, but it's up for all to potentially enjoy!
DragonBall Saga - connect to bawks.org port 9000
Come on and join, I don't care if you want to play an RP name as long as you do it justice. Please don't choose stupid names like Bongblast420, blah blah. Other than that, come and enjoy this slice of nostalgia with me!
Edit: So I accidentally broke something, so I'm reloading the machine and starting over. Sorry about that, kinda prematurely jumped the gun. Game should be back up with a fresh install soon, will update once complete. Thanks for your patience!
Edit2: Game is back up and running, and authorization system has been disabled. Saved characters are working fine for me. So far all is smooth. Let me know if something isn't working right and I'll see what can be done.
Happy training!

Hi.
My name's Hazel, I've played ArmageddonMUD since about late 2021 and I like to think that I'm decently-well known within the remaining community there. Recently the game has taken an incredibly-deep blow through some (fairly-egregious) staff misconduct, leaving some players to leave the game permanently, or be banned from it, though the offending person has been removed. This sounds really terrible for the introduction to this post, but I promise my intention isn't to bash on the game, but to provide a fair assessment of the game's current conditions, where it can improve, and where it excels. All-in-all, I would very much like to see new players join the game and revitalize the player count + provide new storytelling opportunities, but I want them to do so with a real idea of what's in store for them.
THE GAME: TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS
ArmageddonMUD is by far not an easy game to get into. There are a myriad of in-game nuances, history, documentation, and lore that can be extremely daunting to get a hold of on first-blush. Additionally, there is the hurdle of OOC code and knowledge of the game. While playing the game just to play can be fun, knowing HOW to play the game isn't easy either. Coded commands take time to learn, as does emoting, with the additional combat and crafting learning curves.
I would estimate that it would take a minimum of 2-4 months for the average person to become both comfortable, and proficient with the game's commands, if you're investing a fair chunk of your time into it. It is a MASSIVE time sink just to become a character who can do things and not fail at your objective most of the time, which some find discouraging--understandably. What makes this difficult in some ways, is that the game tends to favor a FOIC standpoint, or: Find Out In Character. Which, this can be totally fine for things such as current sensitive plots running, in-depth code discussion, and whatnot, but not, for example, where to find a water seller to make sure your character doesn't die of thirst. Some people take this too far, others can be a little lax on the rules.
SHORTCOMINGS:
I want to knock this out of the way first, because everyone wants to know what sort of shit they're getting themselves into when trying something new.
Being on good standing with the staff of the game can often seem like a necessity, as some players will say, in order to qualify for certain roles, karma (a 'currency' required to unlock certain class combinations, or subclasses), or just to even get your own plots rolling. I don't think this is true, but there have been times in the past where favoritism has been perceivably rampant. Fortunately it seems that this is (hopefully) more of a rarity nowadays, compared to maybe a decade or two ago.
You have to make your own fun 90% of the time. Staff plots are far and few between most of the time, so you have to seek out other players or be happy doing what you're doing solo, or risk getting.. VERY bored of the game. It can often devolve into a feeling of hack-and-slash, or idle bar-sitting loneliness sometimes, but this could easily be alleviated with a higher active player base.
Speaking of that, the player count has been in an increasing decline as MUD games fall out of fashion, as well as from the game's own reputation from 5-15 years ago, or even just two months ago. It seems to average out between 20-35 players at a time most days, depending on the TIME of day, because there are a lot of people who play on different time zones to the U.S. standard. The EU and NA playerbase has equalized slightly, with a tiny NA count lean in the evening. Because of this low amount, the extremely LARGE game world can feel exponentially barren when players are so incredibly spread out from each other.
It is no secret that this game has a terrible rep in a lot of MUD circles, though it attempts to move forward past it against all odds. From my understanding, a lot of this stemmed from staff abuse of players, and an almost entirely new staff team oversees it now compared to who used to do so a year ago. So, the leadership is fresh, and is pointing in a hopeful direction--I'm hoping it's a GOOD direction, but time will tell.
WHERE IT EXCELS:
The atmosphere of Armageddon is unlike anything I've really played before. I love the rich in-game lore and desert environment, the harsh and unforgiving personality that it adopts is a stark contrast to some of the more simple, smurf-village games out there. Characters kill characters, some are thieves, some are desert raiders, some are villainous elemental mages who can wreck your shit. Some are humble crafters, some are Merchant House pseudo-cartel leaders, some are magical corrupt police, and some are spiritual, sagely people of tribal origin.
All-in-all, the game has a HUGE selection for playability, even somewhat to the game's detriment, but I personally find this to be a good trait.. as long as it's managed well. Which, it isn't, but it's looking promising that it will be soon.
This is an RPI (or Roleplay-Intensive) meaning that you must be using roleplay as an avenue to express your character, their actions, and their growth. It ISN'T designed to be a simple hack and slash auto-leveler, everything is driven by your own input in an 'eat and grow' style. Some of the people I've met in-game are incredible roleplayers, even if some might skate by without even knowing what RP means.
ENDING:
At the end of the day, all I want is for the game to thrive. It's the first and only MUD I've played that I've enjoyed thoroughly, but it is fairly in-need of a new generation of players to promote its future. It has gone through a great many changes in this past year, which shows that current staff are at least trying to make it better for those who play through what ways they can, like: karma regen being removed, karma time gating being halved, combat overhaul balancing, poison and brewing code updates--really, a whole lot of shit has changed, and the game feels WAY different to how it did when I first started not so long ago.
I mean, now you can just analyze materials and figure out what you need them for, rather than get lost in the recipes that used to be entirely locked behind slapping two materials together and hoping they made something interesting--this is my personal favorite addition.
I've never posted about Armageddon, or on the MUD forums, but I would really like to hear some feedback from people who don't play anymore on what drove them away, or from prospective new players who might just have some questions about the game.

Thanks!
