Thanks for the update, and thanks for the less wide screenshots, although I still have to zoom in to see them. The web interface looks awesome.
I have a few questions about how things work. Considering this is an RPI, I hope you understand these questions are coming from worries about other RPIs and how you're doing things differently.
1) Regarding the scheduling of the audition, how does that work if Emmaline's player has an IRL commitment like putting her kids to bed? The post says, "most roleplay should simply be played out as it happens without coordinating the details in advance," so does that mean she just has to miss her audition? How are scheduling conflicts resolved?
2) Are these auditions run by staff? If so, what mechanisms are in place staff-side to prevent favoritism? If they're run by PCs, what guidelines are they required to follow in order to judge someone's RP?
3) How does <tell> know who you're telling? Are you required to use a tilde to specify?
4) I see lines such as dreams and other RP that appears to be run by staff. With all this writing, how many players can staff support? How many players would be too many? How often are players expected to RP with staff?
5) This one isn't about policy, and rather a skill description. The description for the "tone" skill feels ambiguous. My interpretation is that you put magic into your voice to cause some mystery effect on surrounding people. Does that mean you can make them feel anxious or in love or what? Is it like an emotion amplifier?
Keep up the great progress!

I think turn based is a real missed opportunity in the MUD space. I've only ever seen maybe 2 or 3 do it and all did it well and were quite fun. The main reason, I think, is that it has to be all custom code since none of the top turnkey codebases support turn based combat out of the box.
I look to the MMO Dofus for well-executed turn based team tactics especially with the Sidekick system which is exactly what OP is asking for. Dofus' multiplay system is really wonky and probably shouldn't be followed but the Sidekicks which are the NPC teammates for your main character is definitely a great model to follow.

I've built in the past but it's been a looooonnnnngggg time. and lately I've just kind of been looking to write more and I remembered I could prolly do some room and NPC descs for a MUD. I'd prefer to build for an RP driven world, but if it sparks my interest I'd prolly be willing to write up for just about anything Guess. Send me a msg.

Hey there! I'm on the hunt for some of the largest MUDs. Here's what I mean by that:
- The MUD should have a lot of different areas. The more the better.
- The MUD should have a lot of rooms. The more the better.
Now, I'm not looking for the MUD that has some giant wasteland with a million rooms that all have the same description. What I mean by this request is: which MUDs have the largest worlds to actually explore?

Working on creating a MUD (yay) using a custom MUD game engine
It is going to feature a lighting system, Celtic religion, and the ability of players to change the map around them and even add areas. It will be scifi but also medieval.
Currently the login system is functional and you can move and use basic commands. It's available to be played at telnet://uniquelyelite.com/:9001
I'm looking for people who want to help me make this an interesting game and even see if they can find bugs or even just fool around with it.
HOPEFULLY I used the right flair, sorry if not

You know how mudlet's screen splits when you scroll up far enough? And the screen stays that way? Makes it easy to read older text while playing, right?
How do you lock the screen to keep it from scrolling all the way down when the mud sends new text on Tintin??
It's really annoying when I'll be reading a helpfile, but someone sends a message on chat and then the screen scrolls down to show me that, or just basically whatever new text the mud sends in that moment and the screen scrolls down to show me that, thus causing me to lose my place on whatever I was reading further up.
I hope I'm explaining this right. But what command stops this? It makes playing on Tintin borderline painful.

I recently got a Pixel 7 and discovered that Blowtorch is no longer supported. I used to have a full custom GUI on Blowtorch for playing Materia Magica specifically and I tried to use Nexus but they don't seem to like it if you use their client to connect to other stuff - just keeps crashing. Anyone have any suggestions here of something I may not have heard of? At this point I'm tempted to just have an AI hardcore what I need into my own developer side client lol.

I tried this game. I didn't stay long enough to learn any of the politics and other players.
My biggest hurdle that ultimately stopped me from playing was just becoming familiar with the lore as well as mechanics was an enormous time sink. I joined some group meant to train mercenaries, I think? They had training every ic day, and I grinded these skills for hours and hours, rl days p much, when I didn't even have a job so I had all the time to grind, never saw a single skill improve. After a few days of this, I was like meh, too intensive for me.
Also everyone seems to expect you to understand all the lore immediately and that lore is extensive. My first character died their first day because I didn't understand some group wasn't allowed to be in this one place? Or something.
It is a steep steeeep learning curve. So I never really got past a week or a few days playing.

Whether you want to play to the trope or play against type, the Orc is an iconic fantasy race worth playing. the original version of the Orc is a solid melee monster with a few unique traits , and normally Orcs are pigeon-holed into a front-line martial role
With Elysium's rather unique skills Characters can learn up to six core skills at a time, of which there are many different physical, offensive magical, defensive magical, healing and crafting skills to choose from. Players can also learn any number of the dozens of "common" skills in addition to their core skills
So while a "traditional" heavily amour orc warrior with duel black steel battleaxes is certainly a thing ( A very cool thing)
You could also play as a Tea-brewing , Voodoo master orc , whom has no interest in chopping heads
Or a necromantic , magical fell-blade wielding orc whom is very interested in undead heads . or indeed a vast array of orcish ideas to mix and match!
The world is immersive and has everything a fantasy setting needs - sailing, sea monsters, demonic rituals, ancient research activities, political intrigue, questing, crafting, you name it!
Free-to-play and a level-less player progression are hallmarks of Elysium.

Hey folks, anybody know what happened to the Titans of Text podcast? I gather one of the hosts, SwiftAusterity, was once a mod here but no longer.
I really enjoyed the podcast, and find myself relistening every once in a while. The format of interviewing creators of MUDs to get a feel for what makes each MUD special is really nice, and I liked getting to know the folks behind our favorite games. The last episode was posted in July of 2020. I have to guess that the pandemic probably disrupted the hosts' lives enough to permanently derail the show.
If you're reading this and feel inspired to create a spiritual successor podcast, know that you'll have at least one subscriber and fan.

I’m sure there’s tons of these posts out there, but here’s mine…
I remember logging into a few MUDs back in the 90s and being immediately enthralled. It was like a perfect mix of the feeling I get from a good book, a video game, and a tabletop game. However, I got fully caught up in Ultima Online, then college, then life.. blah blah
Time moved on, and here I am almost 30yrs later. It’s always been in the back if my mind to come back and explore it.
Here’s what I THINK I’m looking for:
- interesting, well-written, engaging atmosphere
- Rich lore
- Interactive environment with lots to discover / inspect / collect
- Roleplaying would be cool
- I don’t mind difficulty (I prefer it) in terms of mobs, challenges, environment. I also am totally fine with cutthroat pvp / pk environments
however, being new to MUDs, an overly challenging interface / commands / clumsiness might be hard for me to pick up
I like Roguish behavior.
Thanks for any and all recommendations, thoughts and comments!!

At lower levels fights are over very fast, so if you aren't vigilant and get caught, it's over. But most of your time will be spent at higher levels and if you don't stick around for a fight you didn't start, then there's usually nothing they can do about it.

Hi guys I'm back, hope this isn't getting spammy - very much appreciate the help and guidance I've been getting from this community. Just for context, Magma is based on merc/envy.
I've got MAGMA running quite well (thanks to u/proolix u/tsp3 u/PeeonTrotsky ) and I'm down to what I hope is my last problem; mobiles and items do not respawn once killed or removed from their area.
I've got my head wrapped around the RESETS data in the zone files, and I'm pretty sure this doesn't have anything to do with buggy code there. I've noticed that the typical notifications for zone resets ("You hear the pitter patter of little feet...) do not occur. What's strange is that the time of day and weather notifications (The sun has set / it starts to snow) appear like clockwork. Some stuff I've made note of, for reference:
The ticks must be happening in some sense, because players regain health and NPCs move around when they're supposed to.
Corpses decay, including MOB corpses
I've made sure to test everything with players resting in different locations; in the area with the mobs, farther away in the same zone, and in a different zone entirely. This tells me that the resets aren't being suppressed due to player proximity.
Immortal commands (zreset) will bring mobs back, but I've noticed that they often don't reset with their equipment and items (which are also defined in the RESETS section of each zone).
I've noticed that the HEARTBEAT file in magma\src is blank, and I have no idea if it's supposed to be that way.
Thanks to anyone who's actually read all this. Finding people with knowledge about this stuff is hard these days! I've even tried going through it with ChatGPT looking at the MAGMA source, which was absolutely useless :-)

So, this is a loooong shot.
I have vague memories of playing a MUD back in the late 90s and I loved it.
The ONLY thing I remember, and I don’t know why this stands out to me to this day, is that you started out with “a fun noodle” weapon, like a fun noodle dagger or something.
I remember laughing about that —
That’s it. That’s all I got. Ring any bells?

Hi everyone,
So long story short I've been quite interested in Genesis. Eveything works perfectly well on PC.
However my problem is that for the last year, I don't have regular access to a PC. I have a smaller smarthone, and a bigger tablet.
When I try Genesis on either of those, the game loads but without the map. Even when I set it fullscreen and use an external keyboard (so the screenspace is bigger), it still doesn't load.
Does Genesis simply not work well on smartphone / tablet browsers? The same browser I use on my computer and it works there - Firefox.
Like I said i don't have regular pc access. This is the only thing keeping me back from playing the game, because it's very tough without a map.
can anyone help? Thanks!

Hello, everyone! We hope everyone who was able to participate in this year’s Spring Festival event last month had fun doing so. We at Alter Aeon have been very busy!
Here’s a summary of recent updates to the game:
- The crushing bite attack from called druid hyenas now has a minor debuff effect on skeletons.
- Channel casting has had many additional runes added, and the functionality of some runes has been changed.
- You can no longer to cast ‘crystal coat’ on containers and liquid containers in order to prevent weird weight bugs.
- Certain shopkeepers are being updated with new code to create quasi-random potions, scrolls and jewelry.
- Clothing can now drop as random loot in objects or on shopkeepers. Expect some closets, wardrobes and dressers to start filling up.
- New lapidary/mining stone: fox-eye.
- New leathercrafted armor: harness.
- New forged weapon: thresher.
- New tailored items: blouse, tunic, puss(y)bow, partlet, leotard, tutu, and tights.
- Tailoring now a delay similar, but not nearly as long, as other crafts.
- You can now add tailored ribbons to tailored/leathercrafted hats in place of a feather.
- Three new music tracks has been added for the dclient, as well as ambient sounds for campfires and proper gunshot combat noises.
Here are some areas updates:
- There is a new option for area listings: coordinates. The syntax is as follows: areas coordinates [level].
- The Palace of the Dragon Emperor, Gardens and Keep, a level 41 group 7 area in Suboria is now open.
- Mount Zendular is now a solo 30 zone. It has been modernized with proper elevation, correct terrains, updated equipment, and improved mob behavior, and the area's content has been changed to be better integrated with the areas around it and general lore of the game.
For April and beyond:
There are plans for more clean-up around Old Thalos and adjacent areas. The hope is to strengthen the lore and its association with New Thalos on Kordan and to make it thematically more in tune with the lore of the Rubicon Principality.
A similar project for equipment and general updating has been planned for the Labyrinth.
We may be adding a few more channel cast runes. You can never have too many!
At least four new areas for low-level players will be released for the island of Sloe. They will all be level 10. These are designed to enrich the lore of our early game content.

Alter Aeon is springing into action with new updates and plans for the game!
We will be running an spring themed event the last weekend in March, beginning on Friday the 24th and ending on Monday the 26th. Details are still forthcoming, but there will be activities appropriate for players of all experience levels. The Palace of the Dragon Emperor: Gardens and Keep, a level 41 group 7 zone, will open alongside the spring event.
Here’s a list of recent updates to the game:
- We added team option for player arenas that randomly assigns players joining an arena to one of two teams as part of last month’s “Love is a Battlefield” event.
- Small rooms now cost roughly half the movement of big rooms to help alleviate issues with running out of movement while just walking around on the newbie islands. Also, low level players that do not have the sneak skill but accidentally turn it on will now occasional warnings about using extra movement.
- Sleeping by a campfire will shorten the time it takes to get sharp.
- Jobs should no longer send high level players to low-level extraplanar areas.
- The ‘shield’ spell is now called ‘force shield’ to avoid issues with scribing scrolls and other naming conflicts.
- New channel cast runes for mages: Char, Ciru, Faru, Nar, Pil, Urst, Zeki, Enti, Dunn, Xix, and Marr. Also, channel casting now costs exactly 2 mana more.
- There were tweaks to warrior and thief skills to make debuffs more meaningful.
- The survey mining message for custom mineral deposits will now give some idea of how likely you are to find the mineral.
- The message for plucking multiple feathers from a corpse has been condensed onto one line.
- New leathercrafted items: cestus and harness.
- New forged held jewelry: scepter
- New forged simple weapon: thresher.
- Woodcrafted canes are no longer type WEAPON, and will not be given high dierolls. They are instead intended to be useful as held wear slot objects.
- Different forged helmets now have more diverse effects.
- Spirit hammers can now be cast with a poison extended damage type.
- ‘Soulsteal’ has a greater chance of success if the target is mortally wounded.
Expect more channel casting runes to come in the near future.
We’ve been making some updates around the starting island of Sloe in preparation for adding more low level content in the next month or two.
Work will continue on fully implementing the hunting skill and adding it to the list of Rangers’ Guild skills.
Here’s a link to our latest Youtube presentation which should provide further insight:

We hope everyone wanted to celebrate Alter Aeon’s 28th anniversary had the chance to do so! Our next game event will be the Valentine’s Day-themed “Love is a Battlefield!”, which will begin on Friday, February 10th and end on Wednesday the 15th. This event will feature a team-based PK arena quest and will be available to players of all levels, old and new alike.
Here are some updates from last month:
- Using the corpse retrieval option for “summon demon” now works cross sector but not cross plane.
- The “woodcraft check” command without any arguments will now show “(rare)” after rare types of wood.
- The uncastable 'enchant weapon' is now 'empower weapon' and has a help page.
- Bone marrow from ‘harvest bone’ and any spell component made from blood can now be used as ammunition for the ‘Gisco's giblet grenade’ spell.
- A ‘thrust’ attack can unbalance opponents on a successful hit, not just misses.
- You can now add crafted masks to southern-style forged helmets such as a hanburi or kabuto with the “forge enhance mengu” command. This requires knowing the 'forge kozane and nihonto' skill.
- Instead of seeing messages while gathering wood, there is a “carve check” command to see what items you are carrying that can be carved into totems, weapons, fetishes or spellstaves.
- The “set” command with no arguments will show a LOT more settings, such as shortid, autocompare, autocraftid, combat message mode, no gift lootcrate and more! These are also displayed with the “show settings” command. The help menu for “set” has also been broken down into categories and alphabetized to make it more readable.
- The “shadow show” command to display your shadow exposure was added, mirroring the “show shadow” command.
- Randomly generated jewelry has a small chance to have a gemstone already mounted to it.
- Shopkeeper lapidary services have been expanded. A shopkeeper that can carve lapidary materials into gemstones can now mount gemstones to jewelry and other appropriate items. This has a nominal gold cost based on the level of the base item.
- You can put quests on hold with the “quest hold” command. A quest that is on hold will not show up in your quest list. You can still advance and complete quests on your held list. You can see quests that you on hold with the “quest hold show” command.
- Two new compositions have been added to the game: SOIL and COBALT. Cobalt is primarily for making alloys, and soil is for items made from dirt or clay but not finished pottery or ceramics. There is also a new alloy: platina, forged from platinum and cobalt.
- GLASS composition will now show as GLASS/CERAMIC, since glassware and pottery have many similar characteristics.
- The ‘sickening touch’ spell no longer does lingering damage to players, but they take higher initial damage.
- The 'credit buy favor' option has been improved so it gives more favor per credit.
- Explorer point requirements for ranks in the Cartographers Guild have been slightly lowered to make it easier to advance.
- Total inventory weight can now be shown with the “inventory -weight -total” command, and the inventory weight switch now sorts from heaviest to lightest. To see which switches are currently available, type “inventory -help”.
- There has been a minor update to the drow mines and Old Thalos tunnels areas, including modernizing some equipment, adding more mobs and loot and adding a brand new quest.
Here are our plans for next month:
- Tweaking warrior power attacks to be even stronger against debuffed opponents.
- Survey mining messages to give indications of how likely finding custom mineral deposits are.
- A new "dragonscaler" job that works the same as skinning jobs, just with dragon scales.
- Reworking job parameters so that lower level players can be sent to extraplanar zones appropriate for their level, and preventing high level players from being assigned jobs for low level extraplanar areas.
- Team PK arena options in preparation for the “Love is a Battlefield” event.

Happy New Year, everybody! We’re getting new people all of the time, so let us tell you a little bit about our game:
Alter Aeon is a multiplayer player-vs.-environment hack-and-slash text adventure game with an original medieval fantasy setting. Characters are multiclass and have a choice of six classes: warrior, thief, cleric, mage, necromancer and druid, each with its own set of abilities. The game has a huge world of more than 300 areas to explore, thousands of story-driven quests to complete, and a comprehensive gathering and crafting system ranging from cooking to advanced metalsmithing.
Alter Aeon can be played via a variety of methods. For sighted players, we recommend using our custom client: the dclient, which has a map and window system for monitoring your character and channels. For those with visual impairments, we have our own custom MUSHClient soundpack called MUSH-Z. If neither of these suit your fancy, you can also use another client that accepts a telnet input using alteraeon.com port 3000.
We are proud to announce that Alter Aeon is celebrating our 28th anniversary of going live! We will be having a small weekend event to commemorate this occasion which will begin on Friday, January 27th and end the morning of Monday, January 30th. All are welcome.
Here is a summary of recent additions to the game:
- There have been many additions to character features, especially hairstyles.
- Diseases can now alter your complexion and the appearance of your eyes for the duration of the illness.
- Some active spell strings, such as that for ‘stone skin’, have been changed to not conflict with player skin color choices.
- Tattoo artists are now scattered across major settlements of the world, and there is a new related Thirsty Thursday challenge: get a tattoo!
- Certain areas may heavily favor a particular type of wood, and a handful of areas now have exclusive wood types, such as candlewood from the Candlewood Valley.
- The "spell/skill list level" command will now show what skills are granted by guild membership.
- Random metal drops and metal lootcrates may now contain a limited selection of alloys.
- Players may find random drops of forged jewelry and tableware from various crafts in containers now.
Here are some upcoming changes:
- The GLASS object composition will become GLASS/CERAMIC, as glass and fired clay have many similar properties.
- New object compositions: SOIL and COBALT. SOIL will be for clay, sand, dust and dirt as distinct from ROCK. COBALT will be a new workable metal but very uncommon metal.
- You will be able to put in-progress quests on hold. A held quest will not show up when you check your quest list, nor will it advance or complete. The “quest hold” command will allow you to list your held quests, as well as add and remove quests from the held list.
- Shopkeeper lapidary services will be expanded to allow mobs to mount gems onto jewelry for you.
- Primordial Chaos, a high-level procedurally generated zone with random encounters, will officially open.
- Work continues on various high level areas, including (but not limited to) The Palace of the Dragon Emperor, Garden and Keep and Port Crimsonia for eastern Ramanek.

Happy holiday season, everybody! We here at Alter Aeon wish to share that our next game event will be the Winter Solstice celebration, beginning next week on Tuesday, December 20th and ending on Wednesday, January 3rd. Animated trees roam the world for players to harvest. We can expect the return of the EPDS, or emergency package delivery service, for players to try their package launching skills, and the winter holiday themed pk arena matches. There will be plenty for everyone of all levels to do, so don’t miss out!
There have been major updates to damage as it relates to mob types. This consists of several parts:
- When you consider a mob, it will tell you if the mob has vulnerabilities or resistances to blunt, edged, pointed and flexible damage types in a format very similar to how elemental damage is displayed. (The system now uses aggregrates with caps to prevent total immunity or abject vulnerability.)
- A few mob types had their damage resistances changed, most notably machines are no longer vulnerable to pierce.
- A few mob types that had little outcome on stats now have minor damage resistances and vulnerabilities added. For example, amphibians are now slightly vulnerable to edged damage, and fish are now slightly vulnerable to pointed damage, while reptiles are slightly resistant to edged damage.
Crafting updates:
- Crafting experience is now routed out through a single function. Crafting exp is somewhat lower on average, but creating mastercraft quality adds significant multipliers.
- You can now add grips to lapidary clubs.
- Two new southern-style weapons: the jitte, and the tekkan. These are made with a new weapon part, the jitte blade. They are one-handed pounding weapons with guards, so they can have gemstones mounted to them.
- Higher quality ammunition has a reduced chance of being destroyed when used. For example, a mastercrafted arrow is less likely to be destroyed than an expertly crafted one.
Other updates:
- Player edited long descriptions have been replaced with a system for assigning features such as skin, eye and hair color, hair style and length, facial scars and the appearance of noses, cheeks, jaws and mouths. You can change your features whenever you like, as often as you like. These features are used to generate long descriptions that other players can see.
- The "event post" command will no longer work during trivia events (to prevent people accidentally giving away the answer with bogus posts).
- The ‘sea navigation’ skill has been scuttled, and its functionality is now the default behavior for the navigation command on ships. In its place, 'extremophile' is now the top tier Cartographers Guild skill. This skill reduces the movement costs when trekking and gathering resources in hostile terrains ranging from crystal, ice, shadow and even lava!
For those unfamiliar with our game, Alter Aeon is a medieval fantasy PvE hack-and-slash that is newbie-friendly and easy to play! For more information about latest updates, please refer to our Youtube presentation here:

Happy Veterans’ Day! I’m here to tell you about the various updates to Alter Aeon last month and our plans for the future!
In October:
- The “show debuff” command will now tell you if you are hypothermic, dazed, stunned, burned by acid, poisoned, nauseated, unbalanced, bleeding or on fire.
- Changes were made to crafting, including a new greatclub woodcrafted object, and adding handles to more woodcrafted items,
- ‘Forge nihonto’ and ‘forge kozane’ have been folded together into ‘forge nihonto and kozane’. If you knew ‘forge kozane’, you now know ‘flick’, a low level thief skill that does minuscule damage but has a cumulative chance to stun an enemy.
- The ‘skinning’ skill has been folded into ‘leathercraft’, and a new grandmaster Rangers Guild skill has replaced it: flay animental. This skill gives you a chance to get absorbs stats on skins that come from creatures with a strong elemental affinity, for instance a winter wolf skin may have absorb ice.
- Guild jobs will no longer ask for rotten wood types and are much less likely to ask for rarer metals like bismuth or nickel.
- The “jobs nearby” command can now accept keywords like “job where” does.
- Rare ores and minerals can now be found around certain features in the Field of Fonts.
- New weekly event: trivia games! These are held periodically throughout the day on Saturdays via the event channel. Use the 'event answer' command to respond to auto-generated multiple choice questions about Alter Aeon's spells, skills, areas, gods and library books.
For November:
- The Fall Festival event centered around the Thanksgiving holiday will begin on Wednesday, November 23rd and end on Monday the 28th. Primordial Chaos will come online as part of the Fall Festival Event. There will be two new mage spells meant to make ‘dispel magic’ more interesting, and a new resource retrieval job for chaos-infused resources from the City of Fonts.
- There has a been a persistent issue with certain long descriptions triggering MUSH-Z and spamming people that look at them. We are deploying a new admin tool that should make dealing with this issue simple and effective.
- We plan on making an update to slayer jobs so that they award experience to everyone that helps kill the target and not just the job owner in order to make them more appealing to do in groups.

Happy harvest season from the staff of Alter Aeon!
We are excited about this month’s game event: Halloween Havoc! We can expect all of the usual amenities, including pumpkin cannons, monster pk arena battles, and seasonal prizes, as well as special zones made just for the event. Activities are available for all players, new and old alike. Mark your calenders: the event is only available for a limited time! Halloween Havoc will begin on Saturday, October 29th and will end on Wednesday, November 2nd.
Here’s a review of recent updates to the game:
- Weapon cleanup: modifying weapons that weren’t loading so that they would load again.
- Adding several small quarries and the like in areas around Kordan, Archais and the mainland for mining.
- New tailored item: ribbons, and new metallurgy item: medallions. These can have heraldry added to them, and can be attached to tailored ribbons. Renaming them will change them into awards and medals.
- Forged medallion belts are now coin belts.
- Use the ‘lapidary check’ command on mined materials that cannot be crafted to see if they are uncommon or not.
- More kinds of woods have been made rare in order to make it easier to find rare woods.
- Tailoring Guild jobs now require you to deliver the finished piece of clothing to a nearby mob instead of just turning it into the guildmaster.
- Improve at ‘saw lumber’ skill even when you break the wood.
- Remains of campfires should now be a viable carbon source for forging.
- Light-based spells like ‘color spray’ and ‘sunstorm’ do extra damage to SHADOW type creatures and vampires.
- High constitution will help you recover from hypothermia more quickly.
- An updated spell damage system for combat spells that displays a damage entry with various tiers (minor, low, moderate, high, massive).
- Favor usage will now appear more linear. You will gain favor automatically in larger increments when your favor is low compared to when it is high. When your favor is very high, autofavor gain will slow. The ‘meditate’ skill and jobs will help expedite recovery. You will gain favor more slightly more quickly if you match the alignment and class of your god. There are no penalties for alignment or class mismatches, only bonuses for matches.
Upcoming changes:
- Improvements to how the meditate skill handles hit point changes.
- New daily event for Saturdays: trivia games!
- A couple new abilities centered around ‘dispel magic’.
- Folding ‘skinning’ into ‘leathercraft’ to make room for a new top tier leathercraft/rangers guild skill, hopefully in time for the Thanksgiving event.
- Updating the help page for favor to reflect recent changes and adding pages for related topics, such as autofavor.
- Preparing the City of Fonts for the release of Primordial Chaos!

Alter Aeon will soon be having a game event centered around the autumnal equinox, starting on the afternoon of Friday, September 16th and ending on the night of Saturday the 24th. This event will feature the Puzzlewood scenario. For the uninitiated, the Puzzlewood is a special event area which pits you against waves of monsters that increase in strength with each successive wave. It is intended to be a challenge for well-heeled groups of high level players.
Recent changes to the game:
- Gather jobs will reject objects that have had their weight magically altered, such as from a ‘crystal coat’ or ‘unburden’ spell.
- More improvements to jobs displays, including location names for alchemist and assassin brew jobs and color standardization.
- The meditate skill can no longer bring you to maximum favor. To compensate, the favor from doing priest jobs has been increased.
- ‘Detect magic’ now shows a LOT more detail about spells on mobs, and is now level 9 and no longer obscure. The potency of using detect magic on a mob before dispel has been increased, and the ‘dispel magic’ cost has been raised to 18, since it is now more powerful.
- The ‘fire focusing’, ‘ice focusing’, ‘lightning focusing’ and ‘crystal focusing’ skills now synergize with ‘dispel magic’ relevant to spells with the corresponding element. The better you know ‘spell lore’, the more spell auras you can discern with detect magic before being overwhelmed.
- The damage for impale has been increased, and some changes have been made to the damage type requirements.
- ‘Foulblood’ now poisons any attackers that use edged damage types such as slash, slice, chop or claw (though it only nauseates biting attackers).
- The number of invigorate spells that can be put on a tincture is now dependent on the brewer's druid level.
- Bitter and sharp tasting food will help you resist being stunned. Spicy foods will instead help you recover from being chilled.
- ‘Survey’ should no longer give false positives for mining in city-flagged zones.
- The “compare” command should now work with lapidary gemstones. We added a few new thief-oriented gemstones to the mining and lapidary tables.
- You can now appraise things you are wearing.
Coming soon:
- Unified handlers for spell damage, and spells will show relative damage levels on help pages, such as "moderate" or "minor".
- More polish for jobs and crafting.
- Automated trivia events.
- Implementing the ‘hunting’ skill.
Next month, we will have our Halloween Havoc event, as well as releasing a number of new areas, including the high level zone of Port Crimsonia for the continent of Ramanek and Nightmare Plane 5 solo and group 4 areas.
Primordial Chaos is very nearly complete. It will be released for the Thanksgiving event. A reinforced Font will lead there from the City of Fonts.

Hi there! As we transition from summer to fall and students return to school, we hope everyone is doing well. We here at Alter Aeon have been very busy!
In addition to opening two new areas, many minor quality of life updates have been added to Alter Aeon centering around jobs recently, including:
- The command 'jobs find guild' should now accept guild names.
- Lapidary check will now indicate if a mineral is uncommon, useful for prospector jobs.
- If you know woodcraft, gathering wood will send you a message when you find a rare wood type.
- Woodcraft check will indicate the region where a checked type of wood is from.
- Split wood will now have the keywood 'swood' (instead of 'fwood') in its insult string.
- Cartographer jobs now use the 'survey' command to advance instead of 'map'.
- Smith smelting jobs should now be more generous with which ingots they accept, and neither they nor ore jobs should send you after very rare metals such as cadmium or orichalcum.
- Hatmaking is now the first skill in the Haberdashers Guild, so that members can complete guild jobs at novice rank.
- New Lapidarists Guild job: prospector, where you obtain a 5 pound (or more) sample of an uncommon mineral.
- If you turn in a mastercrafted item to complete a guild job, you will receive a bigger payout.
There were some changes to regeneration:
- Campfire regeneration is now calculated directly into player stats, so it will be part of “show regen”, and is stronger.
- If you sleep long enough, you will feel sharp. Being sharp increases regeneration, helps you recover from shadow exposure faster, boosts experience gains, and gives you a higher chance of producing mastercrafts for a short period.
- New level 20 cleric skill was added: meditation. This skill allows you to meditate while resting, communing with your god to regain favor.
Changes to spells and skills:
- ‘Dispel magic’ now gains an advantage against spells the caster knows. For instance, if you know displacement, you will have an easier time dispelling it.
- If your character knows animal lore, demon lore, dragon lore or undead lore, the “consider” command will inform you of the creature’s dietary habits.
- A few tweaks to skirmish so that ‘leadfoot’ makes it less effective, and mobs will be less likely to do massive damage.
Upcoming changes for August:
‘Detect magic’ is getting a facelift. Some improvements have already been implemented revolving around the elemental focus skills. The ‘dispel magic’ spell is also slated to receive some more tweaks. There may be some new abilities centered around dispel magic in the near future.
An overhaul of the ‘expiation’ spell is coming soon, as well as a possible upgrade for ‘spirit hammer’. The ‘hunting’ skill is also well on its way toward being developed.
More improvements to make earning favor more stable and predictable are almost ready to go. Under this system, clerics in harmony with their god will gain favor about every five minutes and can regenerate to full in about an hour through autofavor alone. (This, of course, can be accelerated using the meditate skill or by completing priest tasks.)
We will be reintroducing the Puzzlewood for an event centered around Labor Day, likely beginning on Friday, September 2nd and ending on the following Tuesday, September 6th. This event is intended for experienced players, who must battle wave after wave of monsters in order to win the challenge.

We hope everyone was able to enjoy this year’s recently concluded Summer Solstice Celebration! Let’s review recent additions to the game:
- new woodcrafted weapon: lance
- easier to create mastercrafted woodcraft objects with rare types of wood
- aggro mobs should be slightly tough at very high levels, thus yielding better solo exp
- HIDE composition is now called SKIN, to avoid conflicts with the HIDE object effect
- silver, gold, platinum and various jewelry alloys are higher difficulty; however if you know the ‘forge jewelry’ skill, your odds of failing with them are lower
- dclient now only has one general combat track, but certain areas can have unique combat tracks
- you can no longer smell while underwater unless affected by the ‘water breathing’ spell
- “metallurgy list items” shows which items are cast in molds and which are hammered, and items from molds are very unlikely to produce mastercrafts
- “consider” command and ‘dispel magic’ help page have been updated in order to more accurately reflect the relationship between MAGIC type creatures, the dispel magic spell, and magical damage
- other updates and additions were made to the consider command, including some missing dragonbreath types
Coming in July:
- ‘dispel magic’ will be updated to be more effective against spells you know how to cast, and ‘detect magic’ will be updated in order to facilitate this new feature
- most guilds will be updated to require fewer mastercrafts to advance, but they will require a certain number of guild jobs to be completed
- guildmasters will pay more for guild jobs that require a created object if you turn in a mastercrafted item
- forging new items will require exact keyword matches to prevent conflicts between items with similar names, such as “chains” and “chainlink” belts
- roadside shrines dedicated to pantheon gods are being added to the game world, where one offers an item in order to receive a reward
- add favor requirements for several more mid- and high-level cleric abilities in order to give clerics more to spend their favor on
- additional effects for pantheon spheres, such as a small boost to the skill level or cast level of associated abilities
- release level 34/35 areas of Dreahul and Thuoduhr in eastern Atmir
- re-open the Naginag arena as a regular area
- re-release former event area The Harz as a level 39 area for the Dunn Hurr
Work also continues on the level 42 area Port Crimsonia for eastern Ramanek and Nightmare Plane solo and group 4 areas toward their eventual release in the fall.

Happy summer, everybody! We’re proud to announce our tenth annual Summer Solstice Celebration! The main questline will consist of a series of gladiator matches held in the Naginag arena. This will be a single player scenario that pits you against enemies that present radically different challenges. We’ll also be releasing Starving Rock for year’s event. This scenario is a marathon of killing as many mobs as possible. Unlike years prior, it will be a fully autolevelling zone instead of a single player zone, so you’ll be able to play with your friends if you wish.
This game event will begin on Saturday, June 18th, with Starving Rock opening first and the arena opening the following Monday. The event will end with the closure of both areas on Monday, July 4th after the fireworks are over.
(We’ll be holding the Puzzlewood area in reserve for a weekend event later this year, probably around Sisters' Day or Labor Day.)
Here’s a summary of some recent updates to the game:
- We've released a new island located along the northwest side of the continent of Gianasi. This is a level 43 group 7 area created in memory of Jahmeir aka Colonel.
- Weapons created by the druid 'carve weapon' skill now do magical damage, making them effective against ethereal creatures.
- We fixed a bug that let unscribeable spells to chained onto scrolls.
- Reducing tonics that are much lower level than you should now fail less often.
- The frequency of archery contests and fishing derbies has been bumped up a little.
- Costs for tailoring refactored. They should generally be cheaper, especially at high levels. Tailored kilts should now be significantly cheaper to make.
- Tailor list fabric should now show fabric effects.
- Lapidary gems should no longer be created with stats that can't possibly transfer to objects. Related, the process for moving stats from lapidary gems to lapidary spangles and from spangles to crafted objects should now be more forgiving.
- A third option has been added for tanner: suede. Equipment made from sueded leather tends to be higher quality than normal leather.
- A third option has been added to grind stone: grind. This allows you to reduce the mass of a piece of unworked lapidary material one pound at a time. The syntax for grind ore is now 'crush ore'.
- Weapons of power must be of at least mastercraft quality for the sympathetic magic to work. Lore sources have been updated to reflect this.
- There were changes to how mastercrafted items are handled with metallurgy to make it easier to progress in the Smiths Guild.
- Adding fullers to crafted blades now increases the damroll with no speed increases.
- It is now possible improve necromancer skills by preparing corpses for raising.
- The hitroll, damroll and armor bonuses from graft undead have been buffed.
- The mage 'enchant fire', 'enchant ice' and 'enchant lightning' skills now have 'forge simple weapon' as a secondary prerequisite.
- New credit buy option: “credit buy clantailor”, for adding a tailor shop to your clan area.
- Various updates to lore to in preparation for Primordial Chaos, including new library material and changes to mobs and quests around Ralnoth and nearby areas.
- There has been a crackdown with incompatible spells placed on consumables such as potions, scrolls, staves and wands.
- Several pieces of equipment throughout the first two islands; there should now be enough eq by level 16 to create a cast_level and skill_level set for every class. There should even be enough pieces to create a ranged set without any class flags.
We’re still working on Port Crimsonia and Nightmare Plane solo and group 4 areas, as well as converting various old event zones into regular areas.
Also, background music for the dclient has been completed (for now), with the final handful of tracks being added very soon.

I have now been running the Aadaria code for about 5 years, we have been through several iterations of the code. Aadaria is based upon Shryp's Indeterminate Destiny
codebase. For those who are unfamiliar with its, it is a ROT mud with lots of additions. I am currently looking for someone who would want to work on this MUD with
me. I have major plans for Aadaria to make it even more fun to play than it already it. If anyone is interested in helping me, please connect to godwars.net port 1111 and
post me a note. Once I meet up with you i will talk through what i want to do for this MUD. (I know there really isnt much in this post to make someone want to work with me
but i can guarantee that the MUD is going to be continuing for some time yet!) If you are successful in coming aboard to help me, i will also give you an account on the
godwars.net server to do with as you wish.

Happy May, everybody! We on Alter Aeon have been really busy reorganizing our crafting skills and guilds. Here’s an overview of what we’ve done recently:
There are now three more crafting guilds in addition to the Smiths Guild: The Woodwrights Guild, The Rangers Guild and The Lapidarists Guild.
The Woodwrights Guild includes the ‘woodcrafting’, ‘bowcraft’ and ‘fletcher’ skills, and includes four new skills: ‘saw lumber’, ‘season wood’, ‘beadmaking’ and ‘planar finish’. These skills spread out existing woodcrafted abilities and add new functionality, such as whittling, which lets you reduce the size of gathered wood by a small amount at a time and seasoning wood, which increases the strength and defensive stats of items by heating them over a fire. Woodwrights advance in rank by making mastercraft woodcraft items. Higher ranks in the guild improve your chances of finding uncommon woods and successfully working with spalted and rotten wood types.
The Rangers Guild encompasses the ‘butcher’, ‘skinning’, ‘leathercraft’, ‘furrier’ and ‘shellcraft’ skills, and includes two new ones: ‘tanner’ and ‘cobbler’. ‘Tanner’ includes the ability of splitting and preserving hides, while ‘cobbler’ gives crafters access to a variety of leathercrafted footwear with differing stats. Players advance in the Rangers Guild by butchering and skinning animals and making mastercraft leathercraft items. Higher ranks in the guild improve your chances of getting scraps when making leathercrafted items and making more powerful mastercrafted items.
The Lapidarists Guild includes ‘mining’, ‘lapidary’ and ‘gemcutting’, and includes four new skills: ‘grind ore’, ‘polish gem’, ‘spangler’ and ‘diamantaire’. ‘Grind ore’ includes the crush ore and splitting abilities. ‘Polish gem’ attempts to improve the stats and quality of a gemstone. ‘Spangler’ allows finished gemstones to be split into spangles, which can be added to leathercrafted armor and tailored clothing similar to forged spikes and studs. ‘Diamantaire’ decreases the odds of breakage when working with high difficulty gems such as diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds and topaz.
Players advance in the Lapidarists Guild by finding uncommon minerals and making mastercrafted lapidary items. Higher ranks in the guild improve your ability to add effects to gemstones and gain increased yields on mineral deposits.
Other skill updates include:
- The skills ‘hone weapon’ and ‘balance weapon’ have been folded into ‘forge blade’ and ‘forge simple weapon’, respectively. ‘Metallurgy’, ‘forge simple weapon’, ‘jewelrysmithing’, ‘forge armor’, ‘forge blade’, ‘reinforce armor’, ‘forge ninhonto’ and ‘forge kozane’ are now Smith Guild skills.
- All orienteering skills are now contingent on ranks in the Cartographers Guild. ‘Swimming’ is now dependent on ‘survey’ and is a prerequisite of ‘sea navigation’.
- The ‘hone weapon’ skill has been replaced with a new warrior skill called ‘moulinet’. This is a swift strike with a bladed weapon made by rotating one's wrist. It causes long, shallow cuts than can bleed over time.
- The ‘balance weapon’ skill has been replaced with another new warrior skill called ‘center’. This skill is used to re-balance yourself after an attack throws you off-balance.
In addition:
- Stealthy minions like vipers, vampires and panthers should now be sneakier.
- You can no longer hide while you are on fire.
- For dclient users, combat tracks should drop faster when combat ends, and combat music should continue playing if group members in the same room are in melee.
Going forward, work continues on large building projects such as:
- Primordial Chaos, a randomly generated landscape for high level players with variegated terrain.
- Port Crimsonia, a level 42-43 zone for the continent of Ramanek.
- The Naginag Arena, the event zone for this year’s upcoming Summer Solstice Celebration in June.

Happy spring, everybody! Last month we held Alter Aeon’s annual Spring Festival event. Our next event will be the Mayday event, which will begin on Friday, April 29th and end on Monday, May 2nd. This event will be like the previous two years’ events, with players experiencing a different style of quest as they explore a crashed spaceship while piloting a robot. It can be completed by players of any level, even brand new ones. If you haven’t done it out yet, I would strongly suggest that you try out this year’s Mayday event area!
Here are some recent updates to the game:
- There is a new forged metal: wind steel, an iron-mithril alloy that gives dexterity.
- There is also a new wickercraft item: cornucopia, which can cast the ‘fruitage’ spell.
- The opals in the mines beneath Ubar have been divided into potch opal, hyalite, black opal and white opal and added to the mining and lapidary tables where appropriate.
- Some shopkeepers may now be able to cut gemstones from raw materials... for a price.
- You can add gemstones to crafted jewelry as long as you know lapidary.
- Wetlands terrain (mire, marsh, swamp) now has a dclient ambient track.
- ‘Landslide’ now knocks over unbalanced opponents instead of stunned ones.
- Called electric eels now have mild damage reflection and chance to stun opponents, and the damage reflection for porcupines has been made more aggressive.
- You can no longer doubly mutilate the remains of creatures with ‘flesh beast’ and ‘bone guardian’.
- You can now call animals while resting, as nature intended!
- Reagent lore information should now show up on “shortid”.
- Adding an arrowhead adds +1 hitroll and adding fletching adds +1 damroll to ammunition, even if nothing else transfers.
- The ground cleaner now targets food, ores, spell components and herbs outside of clan areas.
Work continues on Primordial Chaos, an upcoming high-level procedurally generated area. Primordial Chaos is a shadowy, malleable realm riddled with pockets of raw material that mimics other planes. Distinct populations of creatures will be found in the different pockets depending on the terrain. Inhabitants will range from corrupted elementals to demons and more. There will also be distinct features within Chaos that will serve as landmarks, and places to collect unique resources.
Two other building projects will soon be coming to fruition. One is the city of Port Crimsonia, a level 42-43 zone on the eastern shore of the continent of Ramanek when finished. The level 34 zones of Dreahul and Thuoduhr should also be available soon.

Hello one and all! This month we’ll be hosting a game event for St. Patrick’s Day, starting on Friday, March 18th and ending the morning of the 21st. Details are still in the works, so you’ll just have to log in and see what we have in store!
Recently our world builders have been going around and adding new mines and expanding on older ones. They added a mine area and a little horde below the green dragon. They also added a miner's guild, updated all the eq and mobs and made a whole new mine below the miner in Trinsic. In addition, they made the mine in the rock gnomes area probably twice as big. The mobs and equipment in the shadow forest area were updated, and we added a little mine there as well. We also updated and fixed up mobs and equipment in Shi'mon Island, which has a large underground section.
The opal mines under Ubar are next to be scheduled for such an update with a focus on equipment. This will include changes to lapidary opals, and the addition of new opal types, including white opals, black opals, potch opal and hyalite.
Here are some more recent changes made last month:
- All harvested hides and shells now have stats. You can remove stats from a hide using the “leathercraft scrape” command, but there is a chance of ruining the hide. Instead of lower level hides being easier to work with than higher level ones, smaller hides are now easier to work with than larger ones.
- ‘Ice shield’ protects against burning, and ‘slow poison’ protects against nausea. Druidic poison mushrooms can now nauseate targets.
- Creatures that bite you when you have the ‘foulblood’ spell active can become nauseated. Necromancer ghouls now do extra damage to nauseated creatures instead of just poisoned ones. Bottling blood while “foulblooded” produces poison antidote potions, similar to how snake venom is used to make antivenom in Real Life.
- Minions now lose hitpoints gradually if a caster's level is lowered, such as when swapping equipment or being affected by certain mental curses.
- Improvements have been made to the wickercraft list. Wickercrafted items now last longer, and a new wickercrafted item, a garland, was added.
- ‘Enchant essence’ can now add multiple castlevel and skill level to two-handed weapons, and only two-handed weapons. Some enchant costs were lowered.
- The library topic system is now fully functional. Library books can be listed by topic, and library random can be narrowed down to a single topic. To see a list of topics, use “library list topic”.
- Mining can now wake up sleeping mobs! Be careful!
If you haven’t tried it out already, here’s a reminder that the dclient has a fully scored soundtrack, with ambient sounds and background music! More music continues to be added in order to diversify and beautify the world of Alter Aeon.

Happy February to all! Alter Aeon is once again the midst of another flutterheart migration! Taking out one of the weird little floaters can yield a special reward, so be sure to visit before the migration is over.
We are proud to announce that we now have music on the Dclient! The official client of Alter Aeon is now fully scored with its own original soundtrack! This includes tracks for wind, rain, the ambient environment, and full music tracks for different planes and various areas, with more on the way!
Also last month: effort has been made to unify several mechanics in order to make them more consistent, identifiable and curable. For example:
Bleeding - (normal Damage over Time to living creatures). Bleeding creatures accumulate poisoning from toxic melee attacks faster, and vampires that attack bleeding creatures will heal. Treated with the ‘heal’ and ‘bloodbond’ spells, resisted by ‘stoneskin’.
Burning - (fire Damage over Time). Fire and water-based creatures are immune. Can be doused by ‘create water’ or by immersion in water.
Hypothermia - Combining the chilling effects of the ‘chill touch’, ‘Tarrant's spectral hand’ and ‘spectral claw’ spells into one. Instills a penalty in living creatures to strength and dexterity and vulnerability to cold and normal damage. Chilled creatures shiver periodically, losing mana and movement. The ‘melt’ skill and campfires lessen and remove it, while ‘fire shield’ helps resist it.
Nausea - makes subjects more susceptible to toxic damage, and interferes with their ability to use skills and cast spells. Certain poisons may make creatures nauseated, as can directly cast spells such as ‘noxious cloud’. Nausea is relieved by most abilities that can cure poisoning, and by minty
and pine-tasting foods.
Unbalanced - new condition, combining features of feinting and the debuff of a missed thrust. The armor and hitroll of unbalanced characters is less effective. The big danger is that an unbalanced character is more easily knocked down by attacks such as bash, trip or charge. A high dexterity can help prevent you from being unbalanced, and recover your balance more quickly. If you are unbalanced, you cannot use skills that unbalance or knock down others, though other abilities are unaffected.
Other general changes from the month of January include:
- Campfires are now more restorative when you rest or sleep by one.
- Food has been changed. Calories have a more profound effect on the hitpoints restored, though well-seasoned player-cooked food will be the most restorative. The maximum limit to the amount of health and movement restored has also been increased. Resting while near a campfire while
eating can help you recover quickly, especially at low levels.
- Timers were increased for cooked dishes, fished fishes, butchered meats and foraged foods.
- Minor bleeding effect added to claw rake attacks from called druidic mountain lions and panthers.
- Thief frag grenades have a chance to cause minor bleeding. Frag grenades also can now use any spell component made from crystal or glass for assembly.
- ‘Faerie fire’ no longer increases the damage from ‘flamestrike’. Instead, it invokes a chance of lighting the target on fire!
- Thief poison gas grenades can nauseate targets.
- ‘Noxious cloud’ now nauseates targets and lowers movement regen instead of hitpoint regen.
- Thief frostring grenades and druidic called winter wolves have a chance of chilling opponents.
- Crafted ammunition should now have stronger dierolls.
- Being dazed or stunned interferes with your ability to use scrolls, wands and staves. Scrolls are not consumed nor are charges expended; you are just lagged briefly on failure.
- Knapped weapons should now have heavy amount of damroll, paired with more modest hitroll and dierolls. You can also add plucked feathers to knapped weapons for a bit of primitive panache.
- Tailored items now have weights based on their size and the type of fabric they are made from.
- Crystal lights are now spell components.
- About a dozen or so lapidary minerals had their effects altered. In particular, shield block and parry are more common.
Planned changes:
- Leathercraft scrape - all skins will start with stats on them. Using the “leathercraft scrape” command, the stats can be removed, but there is a chance of damaging the skin.
- Nausea will be expanded to one or two more abilities.
- Unified saving throw checks to resist chilling, burning and nausea will be added, to replace various custom routines.
We might be testing out some automated trivia events in the next couple months.

Happy New Year! Our Winter Solstice event concluded about a week ago, and our next game event will commemorate the 27th anniversary of when Alter Aeon went live to the public. This event will begin on Friday, January 21st and end on Monday the 24th. Content will be available for players of all skill levels. Among the scheduled activities will be the opening of the original version of the game as it debuted in 1995, and the Museum of Player Nostalgia which provides a rich, detailed history of the Alter Aeon.
- You can now have an active quest! Your active quest displays with 'quest active'. You can change your active quest using 'quest active <number>'. In cities, the 'where quest' command will give you directions to the character with the next stage of your active quest, if any.
- Cleric healing spells now scale a bit more noticeably with level than before.
- Guards should now prevent players from sacrificing, burning or animating objects under their supervision.
- The ‘soothe wounds’ spell no longer restores movement, but it can help prevent the subject from getting dazed or stunned. This does not help if the subject is already dazed or stunned.
- A bunch of cast-on-self strings were fixed up for sundry cleric curses.
- System restores from gods and players now stop any active bleeding effects.
- A direct hit with a ‘defoliate’ tonic will lessen the duration or outright strip a character of ‘thorn armor’, ‘barkskin’ and ‘sundrinker’, in that order. The long-term room effect only hits thorn armor.
- A new obscure druid spell, 'fruitage', was added that makes fruits and berries restore more hitpoints when eaten.
- Ranged weapon attacks are now do more damage to creatures with natural flight, such as birds, bats, giant wasps, many angels and winged dragons.
- If you have charmed a mob, it will not be annoyed by socials you do it, and animals, charmed or not, will accept more intimate interactions from druids well-versed in ‘animal magnetism’.
- You can no longer survey or case when performing an action, such as crafting, healing touch or lockpicking.
- Work has been done on Khal-Uktar and the nearby areas, updating objects and adding a few new quests and objects. Mithril is now more abundant in the underhalls of Khal-Moria.
- Several minor skill debuffs have been consolidated into the “unbalanced” condition. Unbalanced opponents have slightly less effective hitroll and armor, and they are easier to knock down. The higher your dexterity, the less likely you are to get unbalanced and quicker you will recover from being unbalanced.
- Work continues to improve the dclient, the official client of Alter Aeon. A new version of the dclient, featuring 'Enable Music' in the Preferences menu and an enhanced map with icons, should be available in the next couple of weeks.
Alter Aeon has an active community of players and continues to evolve. For more information, please refer to our latest Youtube update here:

Happy December, everybody! First of all, we want to announce the dates for this year’s Winter Solstice event. This game event will start on Monday, December 20th and will end on Monday, January 3rd. There will be the Emergency Package Delivery Systems, and the New Year vs. Old Year and the Christmas reindeer player possessed pk mobs will both be enabled. There will be a main storyline that will kick off in stages throughout the two weeks. Hopefully there will be enough to fill your stockings with a little fun, a few new goodies and lots of experience.
Also we are currently giving out our December Advent Calendar gifts, so be sure to log in each day for your gift.
Last month, the Khal-Toresh zone was reopened. There are new mobs, updated old ones, new equipment, and all the old equipment up to modern standards. Some of the layout was changed and hopefully any other issues were fixed up. The new questline for the area starts by talking to the physician in Ralnoth.
Here are some more updates made in the month of November:
Some more changes were made to campfires: player made campfires aid regeneration more but are more difficult to maintain in bad weather and impossible in flooded terrain, and pre-made campfires now help with regeneration and unchilling, but not as strongly as player made ones.
The druid plant healing spell, ‘bloom’, is stronger and has much shorter cycles now.
A new brew command option was added: “brew unguent list”. This command shows which cleric spells can be added to unguents, and how well you know each spell, if at all.
A 'brew check' command that lists all spell components, herbs and food in your inventory was also added. You must know the ‘reagent lore’ to use it.
There have been changes to bleeding, such as from bloodletting stab. Bleeding routines are all universal. They can be stopped by the cleric ‘heal’ spell or necromancer ‘bloodbond’ spell.
The first part of the druid brew changes is in, with 'brew tincture' having been renamed 'brew infusion'.
You can no longer join a pk arena if you have any active curses.
New tailored livery item has been added: bloomers, to wear under your skirts.
New forged objects: the broadhead and the blunt-tip. These variant arrowheads allow you to change arrow and bolt damage from piercing to slash or pound, respectively, making ranged weapons more versatile.
More random loot options were added for builders.

Our Day of the Dead event went great, so it’s time for our next event! The Alter Aeon Thanksgiving 2021 will start on November 23rd and end on November 29th or 30th. We’ll be re-introducing the turkey shoot game along with numerous other quests for players new and old alike.
Here’s a review of updates in October:
- The Field of Fonts is now far more open than before, with very few dead ends. Some new mobs have been added to its random encounters and jobs, ranging from obscure demon lord avatars to newly awakened rust dragons.
- Two new dragonbreath attacks were added: crystal and earth.
- The ‘agility’, ‘brawn’ and ‘waterbreathing’ spells can be added druidic spellstaves.
- Druidic totems and fetishes now have druid cast level by default. ‘Enchant essence’ can enchant druid cast level on items that are wielded, held or worn on fingers, wrist, body and feet, but only if they are not primarily made from metal.
- The ‘hawkeye’ tincture is now awareness, which gives you a small passive bonus to searching, lockpicking, casing and avoiding stealthy attacks and traps.
- A number of changes to how traps work aimed at better balancing them were made.
- Mage orientated achievements were added.
Here are some more updates planned for November in addition to the event:
- Player made campfires will be more difficult to start and maintain during inclement weather such as rain, snow and high winds. Their bonus to regeneration for resting and sleeping characters has been increased. Builder made campfires will increase regeneration similar to player campfires, though not as much.
- The 'brew unguent list' will display a list of all cleric spells that can be added to unguents, and how well you know each one (if at all).
- There will be changes to the druid brewing skills. These involve removing the need to learn each salve or tincture individually and instead learning salves by groups and learning new brewing techniques. Furthermore, we will be consolidating the different salves into several groups with related effects, for example, there will be an olfactory salve skill that includes ‘cover scent’, ‘reeking odor’ and ‘insect repellent’.
- Tinctures will be changing into tonics. ‘Brew tincture’ is becoming ‘brew infusion’, the most basic form of tonic. These work identically to brew tincture. Two new skills, ‘reduce decoction’ and ‘reduce tonic’, will be introduced. Decoctions are infusions that are heated over a fire to concentrate their magic, reducing their volume but increasing their level. Tonics add alcoholic beverages to infusions, which add restorative effects to the brew, providing the reaction goes well.
- We hope to finally re-release Khal-Toresh, the Dwarf Village, a level 35 area, during the month of November.
- Work continues to expand the soundtrack for the dclient. Most planes and situational music is done, so we’re concentrating on overworld and area “families”, such as Aztecs having their own theme.
- Work also continues on the hunting skill. As stated in the last update, there will be changes to current hunter jobs to accommodate this upcoming skill.
- Changes are planned for god worship, such as removing earning negative favor if your alignment conflicts with that of your god and making spheres do more than just change which abilities your god’s supernals use.
We’ll also be working on the Winter Solstice event intended for December.

This year’s event is called the Day of the Dead will start on Friday, October 29th and end on the morning of Tuesday, November 2nd. In addition to the usual pumpkin cannons and pk arena battles, this Halloween event will have an very special and spooky questline! Whether you’ve been playing for years or have just started, the event will have something to do for everyone!
Here are some highlights from last month’s changelog:
- ‘Haste’ now being an electrical spell. It no longer ages you, but it makes you easier to stun.
- Infravision is now a fire spell dependent on ‘burning hands’ and works a little differently now.
- Strength spell became ‘brawn’ and dexterity spell became ‘agility’, and both are now druid animal spells.
- ‘Water breathing’ also became a druid animal spell.
- ‘Brawn’, ‘agility’ and ‘water breathing’ can be added to spellstaffs.
- The gills tincture is now ‘winterkin’, which makes you regenerate mana faster when temperatures are low.
- Some minions, such as black panthers, vipers, ghouls and vampires are now stealthier than others.
- Vampires, including vampire minions, now regenerate a very small amount of healthy with every melee attack against a creature with blood, as long as that creature is not poisoned.

- Lapidary should now work with coral again.
- The ground cleaner routine is now very aggressive with discarded crafted items, because some people were being litterbugs.
In addition to the upcoming event, one thing we plan on releasing is the hunting skill. Hunting will be a mini-game akin to fishing but a bit more involved and a bit more dangerous. You’ll be able to hunt in groups, so you go out hunting with your buddies! Successful use the skill will land you supplies for cooking and other crafting skills. In anticipation of this skill, we’ll be changing hunter jobs into slayer jobs. These new slayer jobs will be able to be completed by groups of players like quests can be.
As we approach the end of the year, a lot of effort will be put into upcoming events for next few months. We have Thanksgiving, the Winter Solstice and our anniversary next January to look forward to. We hope you enjoy all we have to offer on Alter Aeon!

Time for a quick update! Our summer event was so jam-packed with stuff to do that we ended up splitting it into to two separate events. The latter part, the post-Labor Day event, has recently concluded, thus wrapping up the story of the Order of the White Knights.
With the event over, we can expect to see some new areas for the high-level Nightmare Plane released soon. Music continues to be added to the Dclient.

Hello there! Alter Aeon’s big summer event has just come to its conclusion, but the next game event is right around the corner! In three weeks, we will have our Labor Day event, where we will present a continuation of the story areas from the summer event, along with level 5 fortuitous notary. The Labor Day event is set to begin on September 6th. You’ll keep your progress along the questline and in the bonus class from before, or if you didn’t have a chance to start them before, you’ll have another!
Here is a summary of recent changes:
- Lowered the extra hitroll group-calibrated mobs gain to make them more survivable at high levels.
- Modernizing and adding mid-level equipment around Ralnoth, Daigaku-tatami and the Aztecs.
- Numerous small tweaks have been made to spells and skills to help them be more balanced, including some changes to how plural mobs interact with certain skills, improvements to flamestrike's interaction with curses and a retooling of flourish's morale draining.
- A variety of changes to crafting skills, including the ability to add brooches to tailored cloaks, shawls and other outwear, adjusting the costs of craft quality improvements to more reasonable amounts, chain whips as a new forged simple weapon and a change to sky iron to make it more workable while retaining its ability to create high quality equipment.
- Tweaks have been made to the Field of Fonts, including making more plashets (short-distance portals) and the addition of two-way plashets.
- Various small improvements to weekday events, in particular to archery contests to make them more fair and to Thirsty Thursday newbie helper tasks to make sure they always trigger.
- Added a few more pieces of cast and skill level equipment in various areas through the starting islands and added a new little quest in the beanstalk area.
For the future:
- We’ve been doing extensive work for the Halloween event, and we have something in the works for Thanksgiving, as well.
- The concealment enchant will be transformed into something more interesting in the near future.
- Tons of soundtrack work has been done in preparation for the next dclient release, which will feature map icons and a full musical/ambient soundtrack.
- Releasing the newly updated Khal-Toresh by the end of August. We are also hoping to have finished the Mire of Madness, the final group 15 level 44 area for the Nightmare Plane.

Hope you’re having a great summer so far!
Our highly anticipated next big game event is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 19th. The main questline will center around the origins of the Order of the White Knights and will feature several single player zones. The event also heralds the return of two exclusive event areas with their own unique challenges. The Puzzlewood Mire is intended for high level players and throws wave after wave of monsters of increasing strength at participants. The other is Starving Rock, an area for players of all levels where the goal is to slay as any monsters as possible. We will also have a special bonus class available to those who complete event quests. (This event is based on our recently concluded D&D campaign dramatizations, see below for a link.)
Much effort has been put into balancing mob saving throws in the past month, making them scale better with level and having each saving throw interact more fairly with other saving throws when determining a mob’s overall strength.
Our builders continue to construct the Mire of Madness, a level 44 group 15 zone for the Nightmare Plane, and a new island is schedule to be built for Gianasi. There has also been progress on a new level 38 zone for the Isle of Naginag.
A lot of effort will directed into the upcoming event, but, as usual, there are plans for some small improvements such as upgrading doors, adding more music and more features for future events.

Happy Summer Solstice! Here’s the June 2021 update of Alter Aeon!
Usually we do a game event around this time but it’s going to be a little later this year. Right now we’re shooting for middle of July, so we’ll offer a more precise timetable in next month’s update. The plan is to release event areas in two groups, with the first available from the start and the next set opened a week later. We’ll be releasing the special area Starving Rock and also the Puzzlewood Mire alongside the main event zones if there is enough interest in doing so.
Last month, we released the Twisted Jungle of Foreboding, a level 44 group 15 area on the Nightmare Plane. There are two high level area in progress that should be completed soon. One will be the follow up of the aforementioned area, called the Mire of Madness. The other will be a level 38 zone for the Isle of Naginag.
Here’s a list of highlights from last month’s changelog:
- A new mob type was added: SHADOW.
- A new heraldic beast was added: the hippopotamus.
- A few tweaks were made to which spells can be groupcast, and we made it so that if a spell can be groupcast, it will show up on its help page. Help pages will also now show if a spell can be maintained, and help pages now show if a skill can be used while resting, berserking, tanking, defending, entangled, etc.
- A few minor changes were made to the levels of some spells and skills to flatten a few pain points in the practice curve.
- We also made adjustments to woodcrafted shields so that kite shields are now two-handed shields and kite shields and round shields will have about half the armor of tower shields and heater shields, respectively, to give more room for carving, enchantments, etc.
- You can now set composition on clan doors.
- You tell if a Font (from the Field of Fonts) if unstable by looking at now, instead of having to cast identify on it. Also, unstable Fonts are now be somewhat easier to dispel.
- Chill touch now lowers saving normal. Multiple castings are required to get the full effect. This synergizes well with icebolt and frostbite.
- Scorch and chill touch no longer stick to FIRE type creatures, and static blast no longer sticks to ELECTRICITY type creatures.
- Event announcements and the accompanying sounds should no longer show if you have the event channel off.
- The effectiveness of some no-norm weapon types has been pulled back.
- ‘Cooking check’ will now recognize culinary salts.
- The spell 'cure blindness' is now 'vision', to remove conflicts with ‘cure poison’.
- Add more options for using credits.
More work was done our our official client, the dclient. We added map icons, specifically to accommodate wandering mobs and when shopkeepers/teachers/priests are killed, and dclient MSP sounds removed from room weather strings. Infrastructure for playing longer weather tracks using the music system was added.

The exciting conclusion to Alter Aeon D&D campaign is forthcoming! Events of this campaign are laying the groundwork for the summer event story. Here’s a link to the latest dramatization:
Site: MUD Listings
Hello one and all! We at Alter Aeon are pleased to announce our next game event: the Mayday mini-event, which will begin on Saturday May 1st and end on Wednesday, May 5th. It will once again feature the crashed starship zone with players piloting mining spiders! Players both new and old can try their reflexes against deadly plant aliens from outer space in this unique and challenging scenario!
Updates made in March:
Changes to cleric spellgroups, including the merger of ‘curses of the mind’ and ‘curses of the body’ into the tribulation spellgroup, the restructuring of the ‘know evil’ and undead handling into the inquisitor spellgroup, and changing the unusual curses spellgroup into ‘divine wrath’.
‘Protection from evil’ is now ‘protection from demons’. It is more limited in scope, protecting from demons, and to a lesser extent, undead and angels. There will be more adjustments to alignment in the near future.
Advancing in the Scribe's Guild now makes scribing scrolls less expensive as your rank increases.
‘Flame blade’ and ‘mystic armament’ can now affect multiple pieces of carried ammunition if cast without a target.
Cold damage from icebolt, frostflower and chill touch is now enhanced in watery terrain, though not to the same extent as cone of cold.
The measure command now gives rough sizes for entities on the ground in addition to weight estimates.
Stone knapping is now tied more closely to the lapidary skill, relying on the lapidary code to determine knappable stones instead of its own internal system.
Archery contest winners can participate in the archery contest, but they cannot win it as long as their bull's eye boon reward is active.
Changes to crafted ranged weapons, to make them more competitive.
The Sinar’i valley, a level 33 area, was fixed up so that mobs should yield better experience, and a few new mobs, equipment and quests were added.
This month we plan on updating Khal-Toresh, the dwarf village, and releasing the jungle area from the death march.
We are making improvements to the dclient mapper, so that landmarks, banks, seaports and shops show up on the mini-map. Plans to add guildmasters and teachers to the map are ongoing. Dclient music is also coming soon! The code is fully functional, so we’re just building up a library of tracks to play.

We hope everyone enjoyed our Valentine's Eve Massacre death march last month! Our next event will be the Spring Festival. This event will begin on Friday, March 19th and end on Monday, March 22nd. Among other exciting event quests and activities, we'll be releasing the jungle area we used for the death march as a new level 44 group 15 zone.
Here are some highlights from last month's updates:
- Tuesday archery contests are now operational! Contests will be held periodically throughout the day every Tuesday.
- Minor cleanup and additions to the Field of Fonts.
- Being dazed/stunned now instills a penalty to dexterity.
- The “value” command can now directly target objects, and it can still be used with shopkeepers as well.
- Ebon adamantine is now dark adamantine, to prevent parsing conflicts with ebon mithril.
- Crafting sampler lootcrates now come with a skin, hide, pelt or shell.
- The ability for builders to add randomized crafting supplies to containers has been added, so you may come across stashes of hides, boards, metal ingots and more.
- ‘Afflict’ now lowers spellsave for both ethereal and corporeal targets. This makes afflict more consistent and useful for making targets vulnerable to follow-up curses.
- Changes to strings and the help page for bloodletting stab to reflect the fact that you can rip into enemies with your hands if you're wearing hand equipment with the right dtype.
- A new spell called 'scorch' has been added to replace the fireball spell, and greater fireball has become the new fireball.
- Another addition was that of entropy for a god's preferred element, which engages the poison damage type for related spells.
Here are some planned updates for March:
- Builders will have the capability of generating randomized areas. This will primarily be used for events.
- We’ll be adding another Thirsty Thursday task or two, including a possible bout of drunken target shooting.
- Alter Aeon’s official client, the dclient, has audio stack and music fading code is in place, and we are hard at work setting up routines to handle music for players and produce a soundtrack for the game.
- We’ll be will be smoothing over stone knapping code and tying it more tightly to lapidary defines. This is part of a longer term program to make the crafting code more cohesive and readable.
